Van Heusen 417

Anybody have any? I recently got hold of two at a price too good to ignore. Something like a fiver for the pair. They're only 60-40 polycotton Oxfords, but that notwithstanding I've been very impressed. Good feel to the material, accurate/non Alpha sizing and a good collar roll. Not sure how old they are, but single needle tailoring and Made In USA suggest early 80s at the latest I'm guessing?

Confession: I've always struggled to determine definitively if a collar is lined or not. These have a slight crinkle to the touch, but still roll beautifully. One is blue candy stripe. The other pink.

A fiver?  Where?  Where?
No, SB, I think you've done well.  I bought a couple of USA-made Brooks about a fortnight ago.  They have the most horrible collars you can imagine but they were under £10 the pair.  My criteria: do they deserve a wooden coat hanger?
I do see Van Heusen from time to time (once owned one of their Taiwanese 'arringtons in natural), just as I sometimes see old Arrow.  Confession: I cancelled an old Geoffrey Scott the other week on Ebay because price/shipping/customs I thought too high for poly/cotton.  Some on here will not touch them.  Others - I think Moose in the dim and distant past - didn't object.  But my USA-made RA sweatshirt is poly/cotton and I love it.  Just over a tenner.
SB, you'll soon know whether you've 'taken' to these shirts or not after two or three wearings/washings.

^ Lucky chap.  My Brooks were, too.  Not sure they'll hang around long, though.

Do you know, SB, the very name Van Heusen takes one back to a different, more reassuring world.  VH, Hathaway, Austin Reed.  There are others.

There's a rather nice 417 Madras on Ebay, but in the US.  I admit to a definite weakness for Madras shirts.

Me too. Pity eBay's ridiculous default international shipping renders almost all US clothing too expensive to be worth the effort nowadays.

Re: Van Heusen 417

It can get slightly frustrating.  I do endless searches for USA-made items being sold here in the UK.  There's just about enough to keep me satisfied.  Recently I've had Brooks, Woolrich, Ralph Lauren, Russell Athletic, Campus.  Not too bad.  I do set a lot of store by those words 'Made In The USA'.  I bought many, many items from American sellers until about ten years ago, then customs got busy.  I even got stung on a scarf.  Absurd.  Anyway, I'm banned until the New Year - by my wife.
