'Mellow Preppie' For Everyone

Following cues from elsewhere on 'Talk Ivy' (see our Gibson's ''Yale' in 'Manhattan'', for example), I'm seeking to Americanize and soften my look a great deal further.  (Additional cues come from memorizing hundreds of images over the years, of course).
Spring is almost upon us (obviously; it's raining), so I've been buying USA-made polo shirts, including a classic white Lacoste about fifteen minutes ago.  I'm expecting a pair of USA-made RL shorts in the post any time now, and some 'Patrick' sports socks.
Certain items are out: Nantucket Reds, critter pants, anything from Vineyard Vines.
I'm still trying to build on what I observed in Jeff Garet.  Pared down, muted and soft.
Time for the penny loafers, the Pro-Keds, the cotton Madras jacket, the long socks.
Modern Jazz Quartet vibe?
Mellow Ivy - Mellow Preppie.  Any reason why not?
Die work wear!

Again, this is removing something from its original context.  So is the wearing, in England, of a cheap baseball cap.  Spendthrift makes similar points elsewhere.

Slightly off at a tangent but if you're looking for 'plain-white-tees' I can recommend Muji, these were recommended by Uncle Ian a few weeks ago, pack of two for £8.95, I bought a couple of packs last week, will have to wait & see how they wash,

Sounds good to me.

Personally I'd leave the socks. Maybe park the loafers? Of course doing that you could soften the look to such an extent that you loose the American aspect. I've been guilty of  slipping over into some kind of faux Riviera style many times.

I quite like that look too though.

Re: 'Mellow Preppie' For Everyone

T shirts are the bane of my life as well. I like a tight neck white t that shows well under an open necked BD shirt. Invariably the neck is too big or soon stretches and looks bad if seen. I was buying decent M & S Ts but the last batch I bought were different (I didn't notice because packaging was similar) and the neck too big. I've tried the models trick of wearing them back to front but that's just uncomfortable.
Are the Muji ones tight at the neck Stax?

I can vouch for the neck on these! My only problem is I take a small, and they do come up a bit short after washing. Next time I'll get medium, but at the moment I have about 10 unopened 3-packs of Campbellesville Apparel white tees, from when they supplied the US military, so they should last me a while I reckon.

I did a T shirt search and Military shirts seem to be the answer

Re: 'Mellow Preppie' For Everyone

Robbie- the neck is good , l wore it for a couple of hours 2-3 times over the weekend and the neck didn’t sag, but let’s see how it comes through the wash, i bought them specifically for wearing under a bd and sized down to a medium, v.happy with them so far ! Thanks again UI for the recommendation,

Re: 'Mellow Preppie' For Everyone

I wish I could tolerate a white t-shirt beneath a button-down.  I can't, any more than I can tolerate a crew-neck Shetland.  I simply end up tugging at the neckline.  I've had to stick to polo and sports shirts: like the USA-made Reebok tennis shirt that just turned up in the post, with the RL shorts and 'Patrick' socks.  Now where's that excuse for wearing them?
Nice to see Uncle Ian back.

AFS- Sounds like you are wearing summer clothes up north. I did hear that it was a proper Spring day near Nottingham yesterday whereas it rained all day where I am.
I find a polo shirt can be a bit of a problem for me unless top button is left undone. I sometimes wear a t shirt under a polo!

I don’t like white T shirt showing beneath an open neck shirt. It’s underwear.

I do have one white T shirt - a free England shirt that Sports Direct were giving away during the last World Cup.

Re: 'Mellow Preppie' For Everyone

As a teenager I never wore a 'vest' under a shirt. I didn't wear a belt for the trousers either. I think I must have been influenced by the TV show 'Happy Days' when I was about 21 and started to wear t shirts then. I remember buying 'Fruit of the loom'. I don't remember many American references that I could copy except Peyton Place and Happy Days. My dad would also have considered a T shirt as underwear and not to be seen in public.

Agree about the appeal of mellow, sloppier Ivy. I am reminded of a great photo in the book 'Jocks and Nerds' (on page 136) of Steven Wilde in black penny Weejuns, white socks, soft vintage tweed overcoat, sweatshirt. It's all a bit skewed and messy but looks great. Jeff Garet certainly was always soft, except when a poor rare lost occasional female stumbled into the shop.

I’m with Ritchie Cunningham when it comes to T’s under a shirt.

I’ve had to resort to buying bulk from Matalan and binning them after a few washes (that cursed saggy neck).

Doesn’t sound like Muji are my answer. Being long of body.

Lands End make some pretty big claims about their T’s. Anyone tried them recently?

The Goodwear ones they sell in JS from time to time are good and wash well. But they are pricey, I remember inspecting them and carelessly saying I would buy a couple of packets of two then blanching when the cost was revealed.

Re: 'Mellow Preppie' For Everyone

Spendthrift - Been buying LE's T's ( Super T's), for maybe 8-10 yrs now, the recent one's purchased maybe 18 months ago are good,  - I think they're decent quality and wash well, however the sleeves are 1/2 sleeve so don't sit too comfortably under a shirt,(hence the recent Muji purchases),  I wear the long sleeve ones dossing around at home, they're particularly good under my dog walking kit, (fleece & water proofs), quite generous in the fit, and as you say they are always on sale so usually come in at around £10-12, and the good thing with LE is you can return them for a full refund even if the items have been worn & washed, I looked at the Goodwear ones in JS a few months ago, they seemed OK but couldn't bring myself to spend £40+ for 2 t's I was going to wear under shirts, however I'm sure I'd seek them out if I ever get to go to the US again,
Robbie - John Lally in the Ivy Shop use to wear a polo shirt under a bd, and in my memory  it wasn't cool to wear a t-shirt under a shirt in the late '60's / early '70's as I recall,

'Fruit Of The Loom' was on sale at Russell Street.  A three-pack, I think, and reasonably priced.

Re: 'Mellow Preppie' For Everyone

Thanks Stax - LE sounds like the way to go for under long sleeves. Like you I've got an upper limit on what I want to spend on a T shirt. Even if the sensible side of me knows cheap ones are a false economy.

I think Haynes 'Beefy' T's were the way to go for a long time. And fairly readily available pre internet shopping boom. Recently I've read reviews bemoaning the drop in quality.

Rux - unfortunately some features on here don't work at present and the posting images facility is one of them. So we have to resort to posting links and hope members will be able to copy and paste them into a fresh browser. I did this with the image of Bill Murray and it worked very nicely, but I doubt I'll be buying any of those trousers  wink Regards Woofboxer
