From Ross Russell's 'Bird Lives!'. It's a description I like, and it seems a long way from the kind of casual West Coast style of dressing we read about that's described routinely as 'Ivy League'. It puts me in mind of Charles Mingus, returning from London looking like a Whitehall pen-pusher. Only, whereas Mingus might have been extracting the piss, I wouldn't imagine John Lewis was. And it was kind of perfect for their ultra-cool image.
But who did they go to for their tailoring? Anyone know anything?
But not always. Sometimes they looked like prospective big game hunters, in their Madras shirts, shorts and long socks.
