John Molloy

I'm surprised this name hasn't cropped up much on the forum, it being a decent alternative to McGeorge etc. - very nice sweaters as they are.  I wonder if Tim comes across them from time to time.  Just bought a nice flecked crew-neck example.

£35.  Seems like a good buy.

Re: John Molloy

John Molloy used to make lovely Aran sweaters, that had that lanolin smell to them. Made with unscoured wool. The Ivy shop Windsor sold them.

Re: John Molloy

LOve the John Molloy. Great arans and even better than my custom arans made by a world renowned maker.

Here is a picture of one of my custom arans in cranberry:

Re: John Molloy

Lovely Aran jumpers, not often seen here as much like a lot of the more interesting British stuff they mostly went for export - I did see one in a charity shop not so long ago though, alas too small.
Mine own Aran was bought from a studio on Inishmore when my mother payed a visit, bless her.

Re: John Molloy

I was sorely tempted by a McGeorge but it was in the USA so the price plus shipping plus the tax this absurd government imposes made it less attractive than otherwise.  I noticed the Molloy was being offered by an Ebay seller here in England who I buy from fairly often.  They're always open to offers and reduced the price by a tenner (which I can now blow on another Blossom Dearie CD).
Knitwear is becoming my honey trap.  I outed half a dozen or so bits of Paine, Smedley and Pendleton recently to make room for more interesting names.  I'd like another JS/LOKL item.

Elsewhere, a poster has referred to the potential pitfalls of buying Ballantyne.

Shooey, in fact.  Knows his onions and won't be fobbed off with inferior offerings from places like Mongolia.

Re: John Molloy

I was in the Molloy factory shop just outside Ardara. That’s where I bought a couple of ties and a lightweight cap. Jacket bought in Kennedy’s shop in the town itself(now retired and closed). Was not looking for knitwear.

AFS mentioned a poster talking about the potential pitfalls of buying Ballantyne.

Yes, got to be very careful when buying Ballantyne. Why?

1). Numerous inferior makers have traded off the Ballantyne name and offer inferior product, and they charge big $$$ for it.
2). The really old Ballantyne cashmere can be brittle. Not always, but sometimes. Even NOS Ballantyne from the 80's can be brittle in small spots.

btw, l picked up an NOS Ballantyne classic navy 80's cashmere cardigan today. Needless to say, l am delighted. Am currently wearing a light blue 3 ply Ballantyne skivvy and navy 2 ply Ballantyne cardigan to celebrate.

Kingston1an: how come you don't post at the other place anymore? Have a few blokes been roughing you up a bit?

No. DressedWell is just not much about clothes anymore. It’s now news and current events, with a social justice warrior stance that censors alternative views.

I think we try to keep 'Talk Ivy' fairly entertaining and light-hearted.

Re: John Molloy

What makes this (very heavy) sweater even more interesting (in my eyes) is the extra tag, telling me it was sold in a shop in Milan.  It's definitely for chilly weather only, worn under a heavy overcoat like a Crombie or a padded waxed jacket.  I assume Milan can be cold in the winter.
