What material was crepe originally? A type of rubber? Or other natural material? Something else? I've noticed
that soles on older "bucks" like the white or dirty buck and whatnot are described as
having "crepe soles", sometimes "plantation crepe".
Praise be to the Trad,

I actually know a very nice Chinese man who owns a rubber plantation in Malaysia.
Really.
His son is one of my favourite people to go drinking with in Soho...
What was the question again?
I once heard a story that the distinctive 'brick red' soles of the old Saddle Shoes & Bucks (Think 'Walk-Over' etc) came from using 'left over' rubber from the basket-ball manufacturing industry in Springfield, Mass.
People just talk to me.
Don't blame me for what they say.

Its funny, i never liked the rubber sole on the buck, I always thought they were way to hot. i had E green make me a pair of white bucks with a natural leather sole.
I do think there are several times to wear a leather sole on a shoe but the off the rack rule should be to go for leather. Most of the times rubber soles are OK are for weekends, evenings, orthopedic reasons, rough locations (mountains, beach), really inclement weather (rain, ice, snow) etc...
The Wallabees are a very distinctive shoe, and while I would not call them elegant they are certainly not hideous.
It has a signature gum rubber sole, which becomes dirty fairly quickly.

The Wallabies are horrible, from Clark's the desert boot is much better
