FOR THE LOVE OF THE SHORT SLEEVE SPORTS SHIRT
Is it me or is there a bit of snobbery around them?
I know quite a few chaps - albeit not of an Ivy inclination - who disparage the short sleeve shirt.
"Off to service some photocopiers!"
I appreciate that, worn with a tie, short sleeve shirts can look off balance, but as a sports shirt in madras, cotton or seersucker they're both comfortable in warmer weather and stylish.
Also, the roomier the cut and wider the sleeve the better.
I see a lot of chaps who roll their sleeves into some sort of ligature of excessive cloth that finishes at elbow length. The Prince of Wales is prime example. To my eyes it just looks messy.
Is it an English thing - driven by military correctness?

I am of the rolled full sleeve variety, I just do not like short sleeve shirts - that for my wearing is what a polo top is for. But it is only a personal thing.

Yep, love them. Actually, it's their slight "off-ness" which appeals. East coast cool jazz vibes.

I love a half-sleeve b /d, not short sleeve, half sleeve, probably the first 6-7 shirts I bought from the Ivy Shop were half sleeve,(mainly Career Club), I think (for me anyway) they are the best shirt to wear with either summer chinos (tucked)or chino shorts ( untucked - length permitting), polos are great with shorts, not so sure about a polo tucked , I've had a fair few l/s b/d's converted to half sleeve over the years, currently a couple of old Gant 'Rugger' madras & poplin, and a Original Madras Co,
perfect 'Richie Cunningham' look, half sleeved b/d, light coloured chinos and loafers , and I think the collar shouldn't be longer than 3" or 3.25" max, for me the collars ( 3.5") on the current JS h/s b/d's would be too long, as always just a personal view.....

Sounds perfect.
I had the sleeves on a Pendleton madras lengthened using tape so that it would be more of the half sleeve variety.
Polo shirts are good but sometimes I feel they can be too generic during the Summer months.

Agree with Stax. Half sleeve (not short sleeve which seems to be a recent trend). Memories of Brutus short sleeve shirts that had sleeves as short and tight as a polo shirt.
I am as fussy about that as others are about collar length.
Seems obvious a Summer fabric like Madras should be on a half sleeve shirt.

Combining two threads here...
I had to return my JS madras popover shirt, previously. Agree with the above, found the collar too big. Almost catering to a suedehead-like style and also unconvinced the fabric would sufficiently fade (obviously not bleed).
Quite like a long sleeve madras (more greens/browns than usual), but half sleeve the 'go to'. (Never, ever short sleeve).
Really like the kamakura madras which has a smaller collar which works well.

Really interesting point about the size of the JS collars. I too feel that they're on the large side.
I wonder if they're transitioning more and more into the mod territory.
My original impassion of J Simons was far more about Americana - deck shoes, chinos, heavy duty t shirts and sweatshirts, board shirts, a wide range of loafers than the 60's silhouette

Looking at social media, there's definitely a sizeable market for mod-inspired ivy clothes. I suspect there's far more money to be made in the 'own brand' stuff these days, compared to premium-price curated brands. I really rate the uni stripe ivy shirt I have, to be fair. Decent. Madras shirts not quite right. Really rate the ivy jackets, too
