The engine turned belt buckle

Seemed to be a favourite on Ask Andy, but is it Talk Ivy?

I think they look disgusting.

Not for me. I wouldn't say disgusting, flashy perhaps.

You don't really see them on sale in this country either.

Re: The engine turned belt buckle

I think the attraction of the engine turned belt buckle is directly linked the American preference for monogramming. On most designs I've seen there is usually a plain rectangle that lends itself for this purpose.

I've noticed on traditionally inclined USA websites they promote monogramming on everything from towels to bathrobes. In the UK it's definitely not as popular.

The engine turned belt buckle is something I consider to be American but not Ivy. I would never wear one. A bit too gauche for me.

Yes, they seem a bit 'cowboy boots' to me.

Could be, is monogramming un-Ivy?

Re: The engine turned belt buckle

John Cooper Clarke wears an engine turned belt buckle. He is the only Brit I can think of that does this. See 2015 Glastonbury set on YouTube. He looks very old now and a bit like a Bo Selecta character.

Oxford Cloth Buttondown also has a post on them.

Shocked to see that OCBD had such a belt. It was over 10 years ago however and I bet he didn't wear it often. I miss his posts as I considered him the epitomy  of American Ivy.

Re: The engine turned belt buckle

A normal buckle is 'too casual' so he wears something that looks like a seatbelt?
