2. A winter sporting fixture:

Rugby!

Carhartt Detroit & Flannel Lined Khakis.
Hip Flask.
Big Nowegian sweater. OCBD - Blue? Pink isn't very Rugby. 2x White T's.
Ugly Paraboots (when I get them).
Optional: Watch cap & wooly gloves in a dark manly shade. They need not match.

Hot Dog!

There's the stuff!  Thanks for playing, fellas.  The contrast between the Ivy and English choices are very interesting, and both sound great.  I will supply my own answers after I return a phone call to Dr. Ruth Westheimer (for work, nothing to do with hookers).

PS

David--

Is a Smedley some kind of sweater?

3) A lap dancing bar -

Tricky.

Will they actually be on my lap? If so I'm not keen to wear nice trou.

I guess Tweed would be out of place... Would a suit be wrong? I have no idea so I'll wear a Blazer. That's what Blazers are for.
Flannels or Khakis like Mike.
Cordo loafers with Bottle Green socks to show the world that I am as wild & crazy as anybody else there.
A Blue BD. Chambray would be good.
Will I need a tie to get in? Or will some young lass only wipe her fanny on it?
A dark silk knit - Burgundy I think.

John Smedley:

Imagine something like a long sleeve polo shirt knitted in very fine wool.

4. The wedding of a dear friend -

So obviously I can pick my own clothes & not have to wear morning get up?

Always a suit I think, but maybe a pale Khaki poplin suit becasue it's summer. 3/2, flat fronts, Cuffs!

Dirty Bucks! Maybe Saddles? Saddles push the envelope a little sometimes... Is it a Gay wedding? Let's go with dirty Saddle bucks and pale sox. I could break out my little worn Seersucker suit too if it's a Gay affair. They'd understand.

White OCBD with a pastel foulard tie - something Lemony or Pinky. OR just a pale Blue polo shirt? How formal is this do?

The other route would be a Mid-Grey suit with the same shirt & tie, sober socks & loafers.

Re: The Classic American Choices Game -

Hosting a small dinner party for close friends

Medium gray cardigan, white ground tattersall shirt, burgundy knit tie, dark khaki cord jeans (I wear these constantly), charcoal/light gray/burgundy argyle socks (matchy-matchy, but what the hell), cordo penny loafers

I’d prefer to wear a jacket, but there is a small boy on the premises who at various points during the evening will want to:

1)    enact a dinosaur battle on the floor
2)    receive “upside-down shoulder rides”
3)    duel with plastic swords and/or pillows

So I have to ensure greater ease of movement.

Taking the wife out for a night on the town

This probably means dinner and a movie.  I’ll go with a navy cashmere 3/2 unpadded side-vented Hickey Freeman jacket I’m sort of crazy about, blue mini-checked BD, olive knit tie, light brown moleskin trousers (flat front and cuffed, natch), chocolate herringbone socks, dark brown saddle oxfords.  My brown tweed overcoat if it’s cold.

Maybe a dark suit would be nicer, but I don’t like sitting in a movie theater in a suit.  Strangely uncomfortable.

Drinking and playing pool with your mates

Sounds good right now.  So hard to get out of the house in the evening.

Dark green lambswool saddle shoulder crewneck sweater (Shetlands are just too warm to wear inside for any amount of time in most overheated public places), red and black broadcloth tartan bd (again, OC gets awfully warm, especially when drinking), dark slim blue jeans, tan socks (like these with jeans for some reason—match the stitching?), Bean camp mocs

Out to the movies with your daughter and her friends

Young son in this case.  His friends are small, savage, ape-like creatures, so I can’t risk anything nice.

Beat to hell BB blue OCBD, burgundy sweatshirt (classic plain crewneck with no writing or weird details, well-fitting), J Crew slim khaki chinos, white socks, black Chuck Taylors, old pea coat

An afternoon strolling through a museum

Olive corduroy sack jacket, blue check BD shirt, black knit tie, same jeans as above, tan socks, chocolate suede ankle boots.  Comfy and a bit Woody Allen, perfect for a museum visit in NYC

Lunch date with old female friend that you always wanted to **** but never did

Dozens of these, so delightfully painful.

Navy lambswool v-neck sweater, pink open neck ocbd, those jeans again (freshly laundered so they’re nice and snug—not too snug, of course, let her have a little mystery), no socks, dirty bucks, light brown cord jacket that comes off pretty quickly—offer it to her if she gets cold.  Make sure it smells good.  Let your hair be a little messier than usual, maybe don’t shave.  Breath must be PERFECT.

5. The funeral of a dear friend

Black silk knit tie.
Blue/White Candy stripe OCBD (Wear White & you'll look like the help, wear Pink and it would look rude. Blue is an option, but not for me).
Charcoal suit.
Black hose, Black Pennies.
Plain Charcoal wool overcoat - Raglan sleeved, just becasue it's more interesting than the Chesterfield style.

Spare Snuff hankies - Ordinary hankies are too small for some people - Pass them 'round if needed.

Hip flask - Somebody always needs a strong cup of spiked coffee.

Re: The Classic American Choices Game -

Describe an ensemble that would exemplify Ivy style and be suitable for the following situations:

Hosting a small dinner party for close friends
OCBD, crewneck Shetland, Bills M1s, no socks, 986 (or the soon to be mine 684).

Taking the wife out for a night on the town
If I had a wife, the same.

Drinking and playing pool with your mates
                                        Same

Out to the movies with your daughter and her friends
No daughter, but with my niece, same.

An afternoon strolling through a museum
                                       Same.

Lunch date with old female friend that you always wanted to **** but never did
Lots of them so maybe something different. Oh, who am I kidding....same.

Guess I am nothing if not a creature of habit. The colors may change, socks may be added in winter, and if the weather is bad, Bean boots or mocs.

Re: The Classic American Choices Game -

1. a summer sporting fixture ( sport and venue your choice)?

baseball game--polo shirt, bermuda shorts, pork pie hat, aviators or wayfarers, topsiders, cheapo flip flops, or canvas decks.  girl in a baseball hat with me. I love cute girls in baseball hats, especially if they're into the game but don't know too much about it because then I can teach them a little.

2. A winter sporting fixture ( same applies)

hockey game at the alma mater--flannel pants or cords, tweeds, an oxford bd, scarf in school colors, flask or other thing in which to store brandy, bean mocs,  trash talk for the opposing team, who is from Canada and whaling the crap out of our little preppies from Weston, MA.

3.A lap dancing bar

Is an experience I have yet to undertake.  I know it sounds prudish but I have always resisted overtures to go.  Although I know it would, in fact, "do something for me" if they were doing their job right, nevertheless, the idea of going doesn't do anything for me.  It makes me think of disease.  Though I guess its no better than hooking up with college girls in some sense.

4.A wedding of a dear friend

Depends on how formal and if I were in the wedding party, which if a dear friend I might well be. I'd then wear whatever they wanted me to wear, within reason.

If not in the wedding party, Grey or grey-blue suit, white shirt , burgundy tie, suspenders, wingtips or tassels. Perhaps flower in the boutinniere. A dancing mood.

Seersucker suit in the summer with white bucks.

5.the funeral of a dear friend

Charcoal suit.  Navy tie with white dots.  White shirt.  Black captoes. handkerchief. Someone else to drive the car.

So far Cooly's choices work best for me. I may take a shot at this later.
