I was going to post something on my more recent experiences with Southwick, but in the meantime, this blog, the reference to which I recently espied on BBR, might be of interest. The same guy who's "revamped" Press is doing so to Southwick. I hope they don't dispense with the ol' Douglas model. And further, at least in one respect, confidence isn't inspired when one thinks of how horrible the shoulders are on some of the Press jackets of late, though I've yet to see their Pressidential models, reputed to be made by Southwick:

Chum,
I fear that this news is enough to send our ol chum Tom222222222222222222222222 into a great decline. Perchance we may look forward to Southwick lapel pins?
Cheerio.
is this the mister dopey from JPress? what was his name? His stuff was horrible! I sit here shaking my head. I cannot believe that guy can get hired.
Steve McQueen was not a great actor but at the end of The Sandpebbles, a great movie, he did have a nice line: "What happened? WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED?"
I am left speechless. why do I bother?

I think more than 2.
Like Brother V, I see the Mr. as a Prophet of Trad. Perhaps some of his auguries did not come to pass, but like Luther, the man tried to capture the essence.
I was poking around Cable Car recently and saw some really fantastic Southwick stuff. Some of the chosen cloths were really superb. Their prices seem to be more in line with reality lately, but perhaps only on the stuff I saw. Whoever buys the stuff is really good. The displays are done quite well too.
There's a younger guy working there for the past year or two, I think. Maybe longer. He seems to know his stuff.
Redundant to say it but none of these places have ever stayed the same for very long in the grand scheme of things.
Didn't Mr. Man have a website.
Longwing: what do you think Press's problems are? Maybe they've been discussed ad nauseum and whatnot, but one never gets tired does one?
I'm told by one of my learned correspondants that their boxers are now made in Honduras (sp?) and are 1" longer.
It's a sign O' the times...
But I've no idea what it means.
Horace, There are a few things that I simply don't understand. First, I've been a pretty good customer for close to 3 years and I can't seem to get on the mailing list. Every season, I still have to request a catalog. If I weren't an enthusiast, they would have lost me long ago.
I was in NYC a few weeks ago. The sign in the window clearly gave Sunday hours, but the store never opened up on that Sunday. Surely the only store on Madison Ave. not open that day. I know they have a long history of not being open on sunday, but they decided to change that with the new location. Only they didn't.
Given their history and resources, they should be doing a much better job of brand development. This is an area that is well beyond me, so I can't elaborate.
I don't understand the Greenfield MTM program. Wouldn't a Pressidential MTM program make more sense? They now have a quality range that spans all the way from Jos. A Bank up to Greenfield - in a small store. How do you make that work? I'd like them to create everything at the Pressidential level and drop the rest, but I'm obviously wanting to shape the store in my own image, so to speak.
Of course I love the place in spite of this all negative post - but you asked for it. It's a great place, I just wish it were better.
LW
edit: One more thing: Their Berle made trousers (which include all their casual pants and some dress pants, I believe) are cut for a man who likes to stay in shape. But their odd jackets are cut for a man who has let himself go. Again, how do you make that work?

Thanks, LW. I think you make a lot of good points, re: trousers and jacket cuts. I wish there were still a decent quality suit they put out for the money, but I was rather disappointed with the offerings a few years ago compared to 10 years ago. I think the only jackets I'd probably try are the Pressidential line. But even there I'd shy away, having been "burned" previously, with a poor return policy to boot.
That said, I like much of Mr Man's playful aesthetic.
That catalog things weird. Ever e-mail David to see if you can get on the mailing list?
