Re: What values are these?

For the Trads at my former home.  "Stover at Yale", recently reprinted, but here as an e-edition:

http://www.ctrl.org/stover/index.html

edit:  I just bought 4 novels of O'Hara.  On the recommendation of the Harris.  I was pained to read, the blurb,  by Fran Liebowitz, on the back, cover, of one of the books, that O'Hara was the "Real Fitzgerald".  Blasphemy.

Re: What values are these?

I just read O'Hara's <<Appt in Samara>>.  Am I missing something Harris?  O'Hara's doing one long piss-take on WASP culture as far as I can see.  In fact, John Updike suggested that O'Hara was getting the Irishman's revenge of the WASP culture that had excluded him.  This is not to deny that O'Hara doesn't have some very good insight or that he isn't a keen observer of social mores (incl. dress), but he appears to me to be far from an upholder of these values in his books.  At any rate, my readings here don't really jive with your commentary on O'Hara, over there.

Hmmmmm -
The reality of Trad. Vs the fantasy of Trad. ... ?
Nah, sod it. It's a sunny day, let's not bother.

Re: What values are these?

Hey Ted,

Don't worry, you don't HAVE to like Jazz & Sack Jackets/Suits.

But what DO you like? We never get to find out with you...

Feed me some Ted facts?

Miles.

Edit: The 'Trad' philosophy I'll grant you has an element of fantasy in it - and for many it would seem a very agreeable one.
The 'Trad' wardrobe is just classic American clothes. The clothes don't have to be emblematic of a longing for a past that never was. They can just be classic clothes.
Yes?
No?

Re: What values are these?

Can't argue, Coolidge. Sense as usual.
I'm just trying to draw Ted out a little, purely to get to know him better.
I'm sure he must like something...
No offence, but the two of you make an interesting contrast sometimes.
Angry young Ted has a lot to offer too, though.
Such passion!

Miles.

Re: What values are these?

on Trad Fantasy, it seems like it is popular enough that it built the entire empire of Ralph Lauren.   When people buy a RL polo, or even Nautica or Lands End it is buying into that prep, classic image to a small extent.

And I can't deny it, I love it too.  It is very appealing, a fantasy of Martha's Vineyard beaches and tennis on the lawn.

And the 'hard core' trads are buying into the fantasy as well in their own way, in the explicit rejection of Ralph Lauren.  I always laugh when I see trads call him "Ralph Lifschitz" and refer to his Bronx Jewish upbringing.  Nothing's more trad than snobbery.  What's better is that the snobs probably didn't go to Princeton, Harvard or Yale either, nor are they truly old money.  There may be a few trads on the forums "licensed" to wear trad by virtue of being an actual upper class New England preppy, but I'm guessing it's 0.01% of the total.

Re: What values are these?

I just wish that 'Trad'-the-philosophy wasn't quite so mixed up with 'Trad' clothes...
Was that the sound of me flogging a dead horse again?

TED!

For one night only -

Unburden yourself?
Not a test - just tell me what you like?
We all know what you don't like... beyond that you are... ?

Re: What values are these?

Here's a thought -
(Purely to help you along you understand...)
We know that you don't like Jazz and Sack Jackets, so...

I want you to imagine me standing naked before you -

How would you make me over?
No more Press?
No more John Coltrane?
What would you like to do to me?

Miles.

Please can everybody respect that I'm helping Ted here and not make funny comments?

Re: What values are these?

Ted, Ted, Ted -
I can only be as effective as you allow me to be...

Having said that, GOOD. You have made a start.

Banish the thought of my nakedness now and concentrate on all those nice clothes you mentioned.

Do you know Cordings? They could be Ted-Heaven for you.
C&J shoes down in the basement... The original Covert coat upstairs (Bottle-Green velvet on the collar if you want it)... Lovely Tats... Heel & Toe socks any colour you fancy (Purple & Orange?)... and nice English cut Tweeds.
Shop there, not Hackett.
See?
We're talking about clothes now.
S'nice!

M.

Re: What values are these?

hah, I deleted the comment after a quick Google. You were too quick!  And yes that stuff looks pretty classic.  I am interested in the UK country equivalent of 'tattered trad'.  Somewhat threadbare, louche bohemian version of tweedy english dress.  I wonder if one could hasten the wear patterns with judicious use of sandpaper or some such.  Or just lots of washings.

Re: What values are these?

Farlows may be of interest too.
All these country clothes look better well worn in. You could save time by shopping in thrift shops for the look?
Other than that washing & wearing is best.
Nothing should look too new.
