Little Ivy

I wonder if any non native knows about the litlle ivy League schools, one of which I attended: Williams, Wesleyan and Amherst. Still fairly exclusive. I have always thought that Williams was the preppiest school in the nation by far.
Do they count for anything these days? I don't know. I do know that Senator Ted Kennedy's son followed me at my school the year that I left. Senator Kennedy was supposed to be the speaker at commencement this year. They had to get a replacement at the very last minute for this weekend's ceremony. Who did they get? I hear that it is Senator Obama. Maybe the little Ivy League still counts for something.

Re: Little Ivy

I don't understand the question. If it referred to the size of my school, when I went there the university size was 1800 students. Far smaller than the Big brother Universities. I'm sure a lot of people here can describe the schools: Trinity, Union, Middleberry: there are dozens of others. you know them if you live in the northeast. all of them offer the best education in the world.

Re: Little Ivy

I don't know what kind of education they offer at Oxford these days. So I can not say if you get a better education at Oxford.
I do know there seem to be a lot of gradations to an Oxford education. and I do know that no one from Oxford is likely to be elected to be the leader of the free world. An english education has nothing like the worth it once had.
compare an Oxford MBA to a Harvard MBA. the choice is not hard.

Re: Little Ivy

at this point the conversation has ended. I had a point but it is lost in this weird dialogue. Take this from the heartland of America: get the hell off of my thread!

Re: Little Ivy

I feel like I have attracted the worst people in the world to this thread. My point is simple. The likely leader of the free world is, at the last moment. volunteering to speak at a small Northeast college. one that used to be denominated a member of the little Ivy League. This is america. get used to it.

We have trouble right here, right here in River City; Trouble with a capital T and that rhymes with P and that stands for Pool.
Try and figure that one out, all of you non natives.

Re: Little Ivy

I just got back from my son's high school graduation.  He has one buddy going to Swarthmore and another going to Boston College.  And a friends daughter will be going to Oberlin. Do those count for anything?  A large percentage of kids from around here that go to elite colleges end up at Wesleyan. Don't know why.

The midwest has some impressive colleges as well.  Carleton and McCallister. The only one that's anywhere near where I live is Colorado College, not that anyone from here goes there as far as I can tell.

Re: Little Ivy

Hello!

I'm a non-native & do know of the schools you mention, but only due to my background research on "Preppy" culture. From the English Ivy style POV none of these schools matter, nor do the Ivy League Unis. or even our own Oxford & Cambridge.
We're into style over here & the rest, although resonant in America, we don't greatly care about.

Talking about Ronnie Scott's will win you more Ivy cred over here than most other things.

Re: Little Ivy

Wesleyan grad here.

Not a preppy scene at all in the early nineties--more grunge/pseudo-hippie--but excellent academics, plentiful soft drugs, and lots of beautiful young girls eager to prove their daring and independence.

Paradise.
