Re: Little Ivy

PS: I just took another quick peak. I appreciate the english support. I suppose I will have to reread all of the posts to figure out the nautical preppy's complaints. Jealous of an Oxford education. I confess I am not. and you can take that for what it is worth. My impression of Oxford educations over the years has diminished, not increased. I don't claim to be an expert but the products seem fairly facile. It seems to be a finishing school rather than a university. Just my remote impression. I assume Tony Blair was the best you could produce.
like the reference to Wes Tech. Obviously a knowledgable reference. If I were as bad as everyone claims I would suggest a note of envy.
PPS: I'm sure evryone will be pleased to know that this weekend I spent an afternoon at the local British sports car show. Beacause I am who I am let me suggest that there is a direct relationship between British culture and Lucas electronics.

Re: Little Ivy

PPPS: I just remembered: I think Horace (my newest internet enemy) accused me of being jealous of the Wasp Aristocracy. That is an interesting topic. But again I will leave it to others who actually know me to make that judgment. Personally, I don't think the word "jealous" captures the right tone. That certainly infers a large degree of exclusion, and I can't think of anything that I have been excluded from that I cared about.
I think people should be judged, not on the color of their skin or the situation of their birth, but rather they should be judged  on the content of their character. strange little idea, that.

Re: Little Ivy

You seem to be a much more irenic mood today, Tom!

Actually, I am not in the least "nautical." Captain Preppie, to whom I have been likened on several occasions, is a Foreign Legionnaire in the "Crock" comic strip. One website characterizes him as a "vain and useless officer."

At least I am glad you are not consigning me to lowest depths of Hell today.

Re: Little Ivy

never read the comic. I do have to reread this thread at some point soon. are you the one who hates women at school? everyone from that era knows that the women were smarter than the men. and I at least have enough of the quality of empathy to sympathize with any woman who graduated from a formerly male college in the 1970s. for the last thousand years they should have had an easier ride.
I do vaguely remember condemning you to the depths of hell. I'm certain I was justified in doing so. I do admit that it is unlikely that I have the ear of the Deity.

Re: Little Ivy

Oh and for that one person who accused me of a lack of courage (or perhaps drunken desertion in the face of the enemy): I can not respond during weekdays. I will be out Tues and Wed. nights. I may be home Thur. but I have been a Boston Celtics fan since the days of Bill Russell and Sam Jones and I will be watching the first game of the playoffs. at other hours I will likely be reading Ted Sorensen's Memoirs or Alan Furst's new novel. I will likely respond to any new claims of personal depravity over the weekend.

Re: Little Ivy

I do have to remember that, unlike the other 99% of lawyers out there I actually have made a living trying cases. Somtimes I say what I believe, sometimes I say things that i don't believe. But I will stand behind every word that I have ever said.  Normal people think the ethic is more than a bit off.
I think that I spotted that Admiral Cod person muching popcorn. I absolutely stand behind whatever I might have said about him.
People may think I am joking but on a very real level, I am not. I very strongly disagree with any statement that provoked my ire.

Re: Little Ivy

Thanks, Tom.  Good to hear from you.  I can't believe I'm your new I-Net Enemy!

Not jealous.  I never said that.  But now that you mention it, envious.  There's a difference you know.  Given some of your earlier responses, I reckoned that you were either drunk or worse.  Perhaps it is worse.   You certainly don't pay much attention to language or argument, but in my experience, that's about what I'd expect from a man of your profession.  In my (unfortunately) broad experience, all the goods ones don't.

I still think there' something to my Townie theory.  Those WASP bastards, I'll show them that I have as much right to the Great American Songbook and J. Press yet!

Your (hopefully) still chum,

H.

Re: Little Ivy

I don't think I had heard of the concept of flame (or some other variant spelling) wars before the invention of the internet. Flames usually imply a brief flare up. Which expires in moments. I do confess I may be an addict of the vision of the bright fire. Don't expect me to say this very often, though.
