A challange....The mobile wardrobe...

My job frequently requires me to travel away to see/meet clients and this inevitably takes me onto the Continent (Europe), lucky me...!!. My dilemma is that I need to take clothes that give me both a professional appearance throughout the day but gives me the flexibility to dress down but dress smart in the evening.

A few key requirements and parameters:

1. I usually only go away for 3 days at a time.

2. I will be going to Mediterranean countries as well as Northern European ones.

3. This is to be a minimum survivable wardrobe due to air travel, so it needs to be parred down to the absolute minimum for the professionally man.

4. It needs to cover both work(day) and play(evening).

I'm sure this is a challenge that many of us face even if you never venture outside the US with your work.

So that's the challenge so to speak.

So what would you pack....?

Sounds like a fun challenge, not that I've ever been trusted to represent any employer I ever had smile

I'd take a lightweight navy business suit, the top half of which I'd be happy wearing as a blazer. One pair of chinos, jeans or cords according to taste and season. One pair black biz shoes, one pair chukkas. If only space for one pair of shoes, then black chelseas (also good for flying - maybe you could get away with these as a substitute for the lace-ups). One biz shirt per day (double cuff with air-friendly silk knots), 3 or 4 ties (incl. one dark silk knit - think Bond) to ring the changes, and one or two polo shirts. Light raincoat and one v-neck sweater/thin merino cardigan. If I could do without a belt for the trip, so much the better.

Don't know if this will work for you, but I am on the road a lot, and here's what I pack.

1 navy (or variation, solid, pin or chalk stripe, micro glen plaid...)
1 charcoal to mid grey

Wear either one, pack the other in a suit sack.

Solid shirts (yes, stripes and checks are more entertaining but not as interchangeable). Light blue to white. I prefer all white, as that simplifies the pocket square issue (1 linen, white).

Knit ties. 1 black, 1 navy, 1 bottle green (or variations, you get the drift). They pack way better than their structured counterparts.

1 pair black captoes or qtr-brogues

1 pair cordovan tassel loafers (Higher, English-style vamp. Can be worn, in my book, with either suit), or monks. Alternatively, same designs in suede.

1 belt that matches the pair of shoes you are not wearing.

1 Pair drill khakis or variation.

1 navy cashmere crewneck (or bottle green, or black, etc.)

underwear, socks etc.

Workout gear as needed (Chuck Taylors pack small + shorts and t-shirt).

Shaving kit in regulation ziplock bags.

It all fits in a cabin-approved roller. The suit is in the sack, which you fold over and snap shut, then hook onto the handle when you are pulling the roller.

My roller also has a small, detachable laptop case which doubles as a briefcase.

The whole kit can be carried onboard any business class flight (and pretty much coach as well in Europe).

This is the best I have come up with after years of travel.

ETA: given half-decent hotel laundry services, the whole thing can go, absent boredom, for weeks.

I still rate the old chelsea boots highly for flying/checking-in, for wearing with business suits in most situations, and for casual wear.
And (an old tip from Willie Rushton) in an emergency your socks needn't match; you could even go without socks altogether if you had to...
