Perhaps you lads will tolerate a brief distraction from The-Style-Who-Is-Not-To-Be-Named-Trad. Many of the British members seem to go nuts for American stuff. For business clothes, this American likes the Square Mile Look, at least as an outsider sees it. The key, to me, is a really loud, fat stripe. Gangster stripes-plus by American standards. I've had difficulty running this look to earth given my location and budget. I've come very close with a variety of chalkstipes, vibrant pinstripes and pic-stripes, but not quite nailed it. This AM a visit to my shop to get another suit fitted yielded gold, a Holland & Sherry navy fabric with HUGE, bright white stripes. These suckers are real chalkstripes and like they were applied with a none-too-sharp piece of chalk, perhaps an eighth of an inch wide. Now, I'm probably letting myself in for a little ribbing from my colleagues at the Bar here in The Sticks, but screw 'em. This baby's coming home in a double-breasted do with an Azalea Pink lining for wear with all the checked shirts I can lay hands on and preposterously subdued ties. Just for good measure, I ordered a couple of pairs of Pantherellas in scarlet. Sure, it's all a bit naff. Not fit for the country gent. The sort of thing stockbrokers and lawyers and others of that ilk wear. But then, I am a lawyer, an ambulatory ego, not Beau Brummel. Let a head or two turn in the street.
Confess. Who else has a thing for the almost (?) over-the-top City look? Any of you TradIvists have a closet fetish for the bold stripe?
Harvie & Hudson butcher stripe in blue.
I am sure there were wider stripes than this in previous years but butcher stripe is a great one.
Good man, Kingstonian. Big bold stripes on the shirt. But come, now, what about on the suits?
Anyone else out there? Am I just too garish to merit a reply? Does one have to put "Traditional American Style" in the name of every thread to get a response around here?
I'm bumping you, but I can't really help you.
London's WWII 'Wide Boys' wore chalk stripes to copy their Holywood heros like Edward G. who's filmic wardrobe was based on the American Gangsters who copied the DOW.
^ Is that true, btw?
It's the version of events which I've picked up in conversation but have never read anywhere.

Let me question you anyway, Russell. Is the big, bad, bold stripe thing still a going deal in the City? I'm almost ashamed to admit it, but my first introduction to the look was a GQ article some years ago profiling various Peers o' the Realm and their reaction to Tony Blair's systematic emasculation of the House of Lords. At least two of 'em were wearing chalkstripes of ungodly prominence. Made an impression and I've been on the hunt ever since. I've since seen it depicted in cinema and television in connection with City types. Alas, I've spent very little time in the Square Mile, especially during the work week. Most of the people I've seen on the hoof were younger types out to lunch and they generally sported more subdued kit. Perhaps they'd not yet earned their stripes?
FNB's your man here.
I'd say that the City was mighty stripey, but FNB has studied it closer than I have.
I am getting the navy version in a SB one button peak lapel. I love those stripes jeeves!

I think that might be gangsta in another way
Actually that came out better than I thought it would. How does it hold up in that light/soft of weight in the DB? Or have you had occasion to slip into it yet?
I would be very tempted to wear my "FNB" or "Triumph Dog" rope-a-dope pendant with that ;P
Seriously though, dont wear a green shirt with that, pinks and blues are your friend and maybe cream.

It's a pleasure to see this little thread of mind resurrected. Some very nice stuff going on. I particularly like Jeeves's bold-ass suit. I've got something similar in the pipeline in a Holland and Sherry 8 oz. Fabric's a bit lighter than I would have preferred, but the only really, outstandingly bold stripe available to me. Should be round about a month out yet. I'll post when it comes in.
