That pic of the guy, with bike, wearing shorts, long sleeve OCBD and boat shoes (Sperry?) looks like every other guy I knew during the warm weather months around town and campus. I had one short sleeve shirt (LL Bean) for a long time, and that was it. Always rolled up the sleeves.
The more I see the more I like.
This Take Trad book is a very useful source I think.
Great pic Tony...I love "lost" gems like that
and I've really liked the idea of separates that would be sold as a suit, much like the way the 3 fellas are attired.
They were a third rate group that changed their name after Mod had gone over ground, Brighton Margate etc, that changed their name to the Ivy League trying to cash in..

And Cy Laurie's turned into this little place called 'The Scene' a few years later...
(Is that right?)
'58 is Modernist, '63 onwards is Mod (unless you were a Modernist...)
Trad is foul. And Mod is a little... you know...
Give me Modernism any day - Chris_H bowling along through Soho with his good friend Fred down to Austins to score their Ivy jackets.
My mate Big Jim all Ivy-ed up and pleading not guilty back in '72 when he done it all along!
Me in my first Brooks rig getting drinks stood me in Heaven in '85. I was like a little prince in them days.
London cool. Nobody can never take nothing away from us.
Up the Smoke!
(I just made that up!)
t.
awesome article.
I like the attention to nuance, differentiating the "trad" tribe from the "mod" tribe, even tho looking back with today's eye they probably seemed nearly the same. But to them, it was miles away from each other....To the point one had to "disguise himself as a Trad" to go to a certain jazz club (!!)
David Bowie, Elvis & Montgomery Clift?
Hang on - I'll fetch me glasses...
I could be wrong, but the pics look like stills from the Jan and Dean TV Biopic "Deadman's Curve", starring Bruce Davidson and Richard Hatch........I only have a limited knowledge of surf music......
I didn't mean to answer my own question, but, is it Tab Hunter and a 'blond' Peter Brown????
Speaking of Jan & Dean, and since there is often discussion here about how the term "Ivy League" was used back in the day, you may be interested in a song of theirs called "White Tennis Sneakers," which is apparently about canvas shoes in the Sperry mold.
The first line goes:
My girs is so Ivy League....
It refers to her style, not education, and her preference for old dirty sneakers rather than box-fresh new ones.

Nice shot of beaten-up Jack Purcells and BD shirt collar.

The film is set in 1959. Great traditional American wardrobe for some of the characters.
