Ha! I gotta figure who this guy was. State Department? Yale professor?
After a little sleuthing it seems like the original owner is the former VP for Oscar Mayer foods and an heir to the Mayer foods fortune. The jacket is coming from Milwaukee and Oscar Mayer is (and has been since the 20s) based in Madison. This jacket was bought with wiener money!

Cold War Russian confidante? Did he know Oswald? Did Oswald like wieners? Ah, the plot thickens... .

In all seriousness, that is a righteous find, Dermatitis.
As an aside, I have not scored anything thrifted, 'bay or otherwise, in a good year at least. My wife and I make the rounds once in a while, and she inevitably comes way with treasure while I merely come away extremely bored. Recent case in point: At a local GW last month, she picked up this absolutely perfect and perfectly gorgeous long wool navy U.S. Navy academy women's overcoat, complete with stunning brass buttons. She is absolutely stunning in it. I frankly don't care if I never buy another article of clothing. I can live on her loveliness in that coat for the rest of my lifetime.

Just curious, did anyone on the forum buy that old sz38 BB Makers hopsack blazer on eBay a few weeks ago?
If so, could you please post a pic with the lapel properly pressed?

No, you would look like bloody gamekeeper. Personally I would go with a tie the colour of the lining and an ecru shirt to soften the contrast.
Oli, before you think about what color or type of tie to wear with that wonderful jacket, choose your color of shirt first. With that jacket, you have a whole host of options: white, blue, ecru, yellow, pink. Plain, striped, or patterned. As with Woof's decision making process, you then pair these relative to the color of the trousers you plan to wear. From this point, the option of tie choice should become easier.
A dark burgundy or maroon in an ancient madder paisley or wool challis foulard would work with a blue shirt and charcoal flannels.
^^ good advice all round, the pattern on the jacket is crying out for charcoal strides and a pair of black grain long wings.
I hear you on the olive cords woof with the wrong jacket you can end up in 'pheasant plucker' territory.
^^
Would have thought the risk UK Ivistas face of looking like a Farage in any 'country outfitters' type garb, isn't an issue for the American bredren. Ox in his Barbour being a point in case, he looks the business, but whilst of the canon I couldn't wear it for fear of being associated with people I'd rather not be. Although my daughter does ride with the local hunt..
Thanks for the advice! It's definitely calling for a blue ocbd, charcoal flannels and black grain gunboats, as Acton suggested. Funny that I never even made the old tweedy English country link with the pattern until now, as it's such an American cut, but I can see why you all went there.

This tie!
Nothing to do with the pattern just what you proposed.
