I saw these in the new Lands' End catalog, and was reminded of them by the fisherman rib sweaters thread. Shaker sweaters used to be a fall staple in the Midwest. The only downside to them was their tendency to stretch out.

In Natural wool these were a Brooks Bros staple in the 80's if not before.
Simple.
Rugged.
Honest.
I like those cotton Shakers, Laxplayer.
They seem great if you don`t want the bulkiness of the wool fishermans rib crewneck, or indeed if the weather is not so cold.Thank you for the heads up.
I noticed that Cabela`s and Woolrich are also currently selling `Shaker` style crewneck sweaters...
These were everywhere in the 80's, as I recall. Many a maker. Still had them at Andover later than that. I was never a fan myself. Not sure why. Maybe it was the "loose" knit. Though I liked many of the Irish sweaters that I bought. Especially the ridiculously heavy oatmealish/grey turtleneck. That and an old school Harris tweed can sustain you in almost any weather New England can dish out.
Do you know that if your Mum bought you one of these from Brooks for Christmas in 1989 it would have cost her $85?
'Ow about that then?
Fortunately, it's not all the same as with petrol and fags, I mean gas and cigarettes...
