McGregor Shirts?

Any info anybody?

Modculture's StephenD informs that they were a 50's / 60's company.

Cheers -

Re: McGregor Shirts?

Similar story to Gant. Founded in NY is the 1920's. From period adverts that I have seen, specialised in outdoor wear, plaid flannel shirts ala Pendelton, Woolrich etc.

Bought by the Dutch in the 1990s, Very popular in Holand selling Ivy Leagueish formal, semi formal and casual wear. They appear to be expanding. Worth a look, but I have never indulged in the new stuff. I have a couple of vintage pieces from the 50s/60s which I like. They made a "Drizzler" golf jacket, a bit like a G9.

Best

Re: McGregor Shirts?

i remeber seeing old mc gregor ads in the 'ivy league - the boom years' thread. also, i've got a vintage (probably) 1960's / early 70s winter coat by mc gregor.

the label was rather popular here in the eighties among the preppy/yuppie folk, who also wore lacoste, rl (later on, not to be seen here pre 1988-9), paul&shark, gant & so on .

from that period i remember a rather horrible 'preppy fashion item' by mc g, green/navy/etc tartan checked baggy, multi-pleated trousers with turnups 8cuffs to americans.) horrible.

Re: McGregor Shirts?

Of course, what was I thinking? I just didn't think of the Drizzler company as a shirt company.

I'm getting on a bit now you know...

Re: McGregor Shirts?

I had some McGregor shirts before when I used to buy a lot of vintage.  They were around back when Arrow and Van Heusen were good shirtmakers.  Some other brands from the same era that were good were Sir Guy, Mr California, Penny Towncraft, etc.  Dont really know much about the company's history itself.

Re: McGregor Shirts?

I think MacGregor made lots of Ivy style workwear and sport shirts.  I have a MacGregor faux madras (it's a poly-cotton blend) short-sleeve with that loop-fastening collar commonly found on Hawaiian shirts and the like.  very nice pattern.  MacGregor had a line called Scotset which as you might imagine involved lots of flannel and tartan.  I think they also did versions of the Harrington and other light jackets.

Re: McGregor Shirts?

Never took that much notice of the label apart from the fact that the shirts usually have/had the 3B collar and backpleat etc and the full cut. Wincheaters are OK I think and so is some other stuff I suppose. There's a store here in town, but I hardly check it as McGregor is stocked at various department stores also. Anything specific people may want to know just ask and I'll have a gander. Funny that the place where you live decides in some cases what labels you'd rather not be seen in ( never owned anything from them myself ). Have to say the stuff I saw from the autumn/winter collection looked pretty decent. Just like Gant seemingly becomes more and more interesting. Could be me though....

Re: McGregor Shirts?

Worth checking perhaps, there's some interesting themes as for this autumn/winter :

Re: McGregor Shirts?

Weren't some photos posted a year or so ago here?  I remember double flap pocket sport shirts.  A notch or two above the ol' Bean for formality.

Re: McGregor Shirts?

Talking of shirts...  and collars...  I wonder if anyone back then was inspired sufficiently to invest?  Surprisingly, this was a name even JFM seemed to know little about, but I went overboard for their outerwear in around 2008.  I deeply regret parting with my Chet Baker/Wes Montgomery Ram-Jet jacket, one of the, erm, 'quirkiest' bits of gear I've ever owned, with its exterior padding and metal toggles.  Then there was the old Drizzler and the fleece-lined Anti-Freeze.
Anything new looks pretty uninteresting, I think.
