Take Ivy: Anyone ever actually laid eyes on a copy?

I take a look at those electronic pages maybe three times a week, sometimes more.  Anybody own the thing?  Anyone set eyes on it?  Now, we know it's only a snapshot of one summer or autumn around - when - 1965? (Jim?  Moose?  Alex?), but it seems to speak volumes.  Ivy = scholasticism, comfort, tradition, Anglo-Scottish influence (continental? maybe not), with no connection whatever to the Carnaby mods or anything of the sort.  The boating guys look not unlike the kids at the school I work in; there are glimpses of facial hair; there are even logos on jackets and sweatshirts.  It all seems a world away from the Anglo tradition.  Now - the thing is - did John expect to attract English executive types?  Probably.  Did they go instead to Carnaby Street?  Quite possibly.  Thus the early skinhead, but dressing in a more military/marine/astronaut style: button-downs pressed, wingtips highly polished, crease in the strides.  So just how many strands do we have?  The all-over crop was never Ivy, right? - it had to be graded, very subtly, like mine is now.  God, we need a time capsule!
Sorry to go on like this, but as a trained historian I must delve...

John and co. of course throw into the mix Bryan Forbes, the lovely Italian influence etc. so what is, so to speak, kosher and what is not?  Jim, I know you don't like rules any more than I do, but there has to be boundaries, yes?  I make it my rule now to dress inside sixty seconds: the colour of shirt dictates everything else - all blue today: cardie, Notre Dame nylon track jacket (Champion), dark denim (Bean) - all thrown on.  So unlike my moddy days, when I had to do a Marc Bolan and change my gear three or four times a day...

Those students I think wanted or at least liked to dress nonchalantly using the only type of clothing they really knew or grew up with whereas the English kids I would say made a more conscious choice in that respect and what's more : they definitely wanted to look sharp, neat and tidy, not scruffy. So they came from a very, very different angle and had nothing in common whatsoever apart from a superficial sartorial resemblance.

That's well put, Alex.  But I remember English skinheads as simply looking brutal in their crombies, jeans and boots.  This would be around 1970.

Re: Take Ivy: Anyone ever actually laid eyes on a copy?

Obviously all of this is pretty crucial stuff as for my next essay. I've already asked Chris and John to help me out once again and have approached a few others too. Please do feel free if you were there to contact me privately ( Kingstonian ? ). My aim is as usual to try and shed some new light on a subject that has been covered before although basically always as a sideline. So I'll try to capture all of that in one piece and will hopefully be able to add some interesting thoughts.

I do have a pretty clear idea as for the format already but, once again, I won't be able to do it properly without your help......TIA,

Alex

I have a copy.  I need to photograph it for Tony among others.  Sorry, I'm slack.

Yeah, some Japanese guy selling on Ebay said he'd look into it for me next time he was over there.

Holding my breath!

Good observation about Ivy in the US - The way Ivy was subverted in the UK is much more lively I think. Sharper too.

Re: Take Ivy: Anyone ever actually laid eyes on a copy?

That's an astute observation, about grammar school kids from a working class background.  My grammar went comp during my second year, and the harder, smarter kids were over there, showing the way - no uniform as such, no headmasterly crap about not wearing red socks with brogues.  Younger kids tended to wear brighter colours - stripy socks and tank tops - older hardnuts darker gear like crombies and lairy bastards Budgie jackets (but not daft cloggies).
Prince of Wales check was huge, and I remember, circa '72, affecting a velvet two button jacket (lorra laffs!), P of W baggies and platforms (eek!)  My mate and I ventured into Nottingham and almost instantly got manhandled by some of their lads.  We pair had to talk over way out of it PDQ.
Of course the stuff was cheap or borrowed; only Docs really cost money.  It was all paper rounds and stuff, or nicking.
I do remember seeing the odd crop still, but only on boneheads.  The lads who pulled had centre partings.
