BB Timeless Classics

BB has published an elegant volume I, 256 pages, that may have been around for some time. My wife got a purchase from BB recently (I hope that it is the cashmere navy tennis sweater, but I digress), and it was in the package. First time that I have seen it.

The publication is entitled "Timeless Classics". It is a major effort to build the brand, and takes a page from the Ben Silver philosophy of a publication that you will be hesitant to throw away, keeping it on the coffee table, or at least in the bathroom.

It is an interesting composite of what many here would consider to be the pluses and minuses of contemporary BB.

Pluses:
They have tried to feature the traditional American styles that were staples. No Black Fleece, Thom Browne garments, that many here find a bit jarring.

The standbys such as:
OCBD, gotta iron, with the perfect collar roll.
Shoe collection that is close to perfect.
Furnishings, such as belts, that seem timeless.
Grand depiction of the great BB rep ties, that most of us love.

Regretably :
From the photos, there doesn't seem to be a single suit, or blazer that is 3/2. All seem to be,either high gorge 3 button, or 2 button.
All jackets appear to be shaped at the waist. The one that is labeled a "sack", isn't.
None of the crew neck sweaters (aka jumpers) appear to have saddle shoulders.
Notch lapel dinner jackets.

It's their store, and they know a lot more about their business than I can pretend to. However, they could feel free to disregard the input, but if RS, Horace, Brownshoe, Patrick, RMeyer, Tom22 or Cooley ( to name only a few), could be enlisted to express an opinion on their offerings, it would seem to be very beneficial to BB.

The best was the Epilogue:

"As a rule of thumb, the confidence that comes from the feeling of being well-dressed is immeasurable".

Indeed. Seems to sum up nicely, the reason that kindred spirits gather here from time to time.

I'm just glad I saw the old 346 before it was all over...
I stayed the same, they didn't. Love affairs often end like that.

J. Press has been far more faithful to me & J. Simons even more so.

I wish Brooks well - Let them leave me behind.

Re: BB Timeless Classics

I never got to experience the BB of old.  I have purchased and will continue to purchase select items from them.  It does not seem that BB is no longer one stop shopping for those interested in the Ivy look.  Thankfully, the internet has made it much easier to learn about and purchase from other retailers.

Some of the vintage stuff on Ebay is worth a glance.  I've managed to pick up excellent overcoats from the 50s or 60s.

Re: BB Timeless Classics

Brooks is not the store that I knew. But the store I knew could not have become a large national retailor. JAB is the only rival on the scene. RL pretends to be a national retailor but is not: they really have a shirt franchise which supports the rest of the empire. They really don't have many actual retail stores, as opposed to factory stores, of which they have a bunch.
Brooks is the only national retailor of fairly expensive men's clothing. I wish they had remained a regional retailor. But the economics of any publicly traded business usually dictates growth.
Of course now it is a private business. Maybe they will shrink now that they don't have to worry about quarterly financial statements.
One of these days I will put up a post about the old Brooks as opposed to the new. The stuff that endures. the stuff that is better.
For the moment: A Brooks cashmere sweater fashioned in Italy but woven in Scotland is as good if not better than anything Brooks did in the old days. And the color selection is at least as good. An incredible improvement over what was offered for the last twenty years.

Re: BB Timeless Classics

The sized socks, I think Mark asked about recently. Fabulous stuff, particularly the sized cotton. I always assumed they are Pantharella. Always did. They have something similar on their website. Great socks in wool and cotton. Full calf and half calf. Always a Brooks standard for way before I was a shopper.

Re: BB Timeless Classics

English woolen robes. Actually Brooks offers a bit of a wider selection than in days of yore. They always offered a camel hair robe at many times the price of the wool one. and they always offered a silk lined cashmere robe made in England at an extravagant price. Not too much of a change in this area. The wool robe was always an indulgence. The others were priced by a multiplier. Just like today.

Re: BB Timeless Classics

English slippers. Always offered in Navy Blue. Took quite a price rise this season. Always made by the same English company. Draper's of Glouster? Do I have that right? They do the great sheepskin slippers that I switch over to in winter. Old Brooks. Actually: Oldest of Brooks.

Re: BB Timeless Classics

I remember being an associate at a law firm in Westport in the early eighties. The Brooks catalogue was passed around. As someone said. "They aren't as expensive as a lot of other places". Some of the stuff was expensive. I think they marketed a lot of stuff that was affordable. They did have a marketing scheme that started you off in prep school or college, offered very good value stuff for someone in their twenties and later tried to hook you with the luxe English shoes and Golden Fleece suits (the idea was aspirational: you just graduated from level to level). But they were not a national franchise back then.  Their then sports clothes: sweaters and corduroy pants and those oxford shirts, were always a bargain on sale, at least in my time. The idea was cradle to grave.
