I dunno about the UK, but here in LA I see quite often old men wearing the natural/tan harrington (doesnt appear to be Baracuta, but is a harrington). So much so that you wonder if they didnt hand out G9s at the old age home....it leaves me wondering if these old men are wearing them because it's something they wore in their youth and just continued to do so, or if it's indeed some unspoken manifesto that old geezers and tan G9s go hand in hand, regardless if you ever wore one in your youth or even know about the jacket's "heritage"
Brooks Brothers sells something very similar to the G9 as a "Golf Jacket". I wonder if this isn't the answer to the old man question. I see a lot of old guys in the color you mentioned around Louisville, as well. I just figured they picked up the Brooks one or a knock off labeled as some kind of casual sport jacket. But I could be wrong.
Ahhhh - The passage of time!
The G9 was right then, but is it now?
McQueen can also be seen in some very dodgy gear indeed. Okay, name one guy on here who doesn't rate some aspect of his style and I'll be surprised, very surprised. I don't know about his status as an Ivy icon, but he's an icon sure enough. The way he wore the G9 was out of this world - but then there was only one McQueen! If reincarnated I'd like to come back as his right forefinger...
But he does look nice in that blue Harrington...
I think he gave up on his image a bit when he grew old and ill. Fair enough.
Which they do, don't they? Maybe Baracuta will follow the trail blazed by Fred Perry and start doing hoodies and sneakers for faux-chav girly girls...
Mornin', Jim. You're up early. Sniffin' the country air, no doubt. Greenfinches here in the garden...
I'm on ciggy No. 2 already!
Smokin' with style, I'd warrant!
Coughing with aplomb!
I'm all for updating classic gear but this is crossing the line by a f**king mile or so indeed
Anything with a hood makes me deeply suspicious: a hangover from the old naff parka days (those blue horrors with the artificial fur). As soon as anybody starts describing anything as 'a timeless classic' I begin smelling hype: marketing. I could never have worn United Colours back in the 80s, and my intense suspicion of Levis dates from that same 'orrible decade. McQueen looks the business - undeniable - but The Clash posing as rude boys? Do me a great big favour!
Go on Ebay, do a search for 'Harrington jacket' and marvel at the muck from Merc (just to give one less than shining example).
You'll always be able to get an argument over the Harrington, often from blokes who haven't the foggiest about its origins. I'd like to see a picture of Hemingway wearing his (and I don't mean Wayne Hemingway, either, the tosser!)
There comes a point (Like here!) where what you do, Alex, is the sharpest option. If, as a brand, Baracuta throw it all away then they're over. Just now I feel that J. Press are doing that too...
And so your POV kicks in - What are the other options? What's out there? What works? What's new?
For me, I went G4 after the debased G9 (although I still rate the Bramble), now Chetmiles has opend my eyes to seeing The Drizzler as the way forward.
Now maybe that's a backward step & not a forward step for most people, but what counts is the constant evaluation of everything & the constant questioning of it all. That to me is what you do so well.
I've got my rut & I love it there, but even I'm not fixed on XYZ being the be all & end all of our style. That way leads to period dressing.
Apart from a few shirts, my lot dropped Brooks as soon as they dropped us. Press are going that way now too. The Baracuta ain't what is was either.
My evolution moves slower than yours, A., but got forbid it ever stops.
I'll admit I was lucky: I picked up my Drizzler (which is a good 40-plus years old) for about £3 on the Bay. There was just no interest and the exchange rate was well in our favour. The seller had been in the USAAF, based in Gloucestershire (I think), back in the 50s (I'm pretty certain!), and Drizzlers had been worn by US servicemen then. They're a bit pricier now, but still good value - the trick is getting one that still has the metal tag attached to the zipper.
