'Swoon': A Film by Tom Kalin. 1992.
Can I recommend this film to all lovers of style?
A re-telling of the Leopold/Loeb case, but wonderfully unlike Hitchcock's 'Rope'.
Art-House-y and black and white, but done so well that you don't mind. In other hands the film could have been too self-conscious, but Mr. Kalin pulls it all off very well.
1924 Chicago with lots & lots of lovely touches...
Clothes, cars, eye-glass frames - Period details abound.
Yes, the boys were bad, but Kalin also makes them real and human... & oddly touching too in their relationship. Quite a feat, considering their crime.
Only 80 mins long, but time well spent.
Daniel Schlachet and Craig Chester play the boys very well.
Atmospheric and strangely moving.
One of my favourites. Any other fans?

I've been looking for stills to put up...
Hard to find.
I first saw it in '92/'93, at the ICA, on the Mall, London. Probably as a part of some NFT film festival. A very mixed crowd and a real silence throughout the film. People were paying attention for once. Rare in a cinema.
It's quirky... , but it's good brain food.
