Also wrong according to Hardy Amies (ABC), but he can't stand short sleeves either and he seems to be quite against American style in general... He did like tight jeans though... Still, nice to read a book.... I ought to do a thread about the late Mr Amies, and his points about American style, there's at least a half page on that subject, and another one on Natural Shoulders... it's all generalising, witty stuff, highly subjective, and not always correct...

Some interesting points, though, but I guess, after all, he just wasn't into The Look...

... His idea of men's fashion is very British, but not in a traditional way as the Savile Row/ "drape" fetishists of the MBs would understand it. He acknowledges the influence of foreign fashions, but he insists on the superiority of British style, somehow. He is all for moving with the fashions, i.e. the slim line, low rise, narrow, tapered trousers, "natural" shoulders, high gorge, high button jackets etc., but a lot of what he writes sounds like a warning that seems to be written with young flamboyant mods in mind...

When I read the stuff about American style, I was wondering, if it was just personal taste or if there was something else... was Austins competition for Amies ? No Ivy Shop in 64, JS must have been doing Clothesville at that time... He would have known Austins, I guess...

But how much did these shops sell?

How much did the Carnaby stores sell?

Not that good with numbers...

I think with his Hepworth's deal he must have done very well.... all over the country, that is... not just a couple of Soho boutiques...

I hate seeing people 'dressed up' for funerals. The funeral/wedding suit, the funeral tie. The same tie that everyone else has. All bought from M&S a few days before. They probably bumped into someone else going to the same funeral buying the same tie and had a wee chat about 'how sad it all is'.

My funeral will be on a dress down Friday... and the coffin will come in to 'Straight outta Compton'.

Yeah, it's a great thread didn't mean to send it off track. Just a throw away comment, didn't expect it would be commented on further.

Anyhow. I like both crumpled and neat. Sta prest with a well pressed shirt and loafers: great. Chinos, crumpled with a madras under shetland and wooly sock. battered keds combo: greater.

I can't tell which one I like more... whatever takes my fancy at the time.

I also like to mix and match. Sta prest with l/s madras with rolled sleeves as per #3 in the posted diagram is a favoured summer look.
