I've been highly impressed with Gibson Gardens' contributions - following on from Toffeeman - in the sense that he has identified in Ivy something of major importance: a lack of aggression.
Britain is a pretty violent place right now - I feel wholly safe wandering down to Venice's fish market at four in the morning but would be wary of an evening out locally - and it cannot be denied certain sub-cultures (if we must pretty them up in that way) play their part. Nothing very new about this of course: teddy boys, beach fighting mods and rockers, skinheads, casuals...
We're just not like that. The rejection of 'skinhead' needed to be asserted, and GG was brave enough to go out on a limb. We've nothing more significant in common with those lads than the button-down collar (not Ben Sherman or Jaytex) and brogues.
This is purely an Anglo observation, nothing against Get Smart or any of the non-English. Ivy is not tribal, even in England. There's no 'scene'. Some of us, I think, would like to meet, chat and get to know one another.
We're an endangered species.
I brought up this idea of a "tribe" but I realise you're probably not organised enough to be that.
You just seem to be a typically English "subculture", it's something in the way it's all codified.
