The Rugby Shirt

Never have I despised any single item of clothing more than this.  In my teens and twenties those wearing them I would always take a long walk to avoid.  Now, far be it from me to put a match beneath the Ivy/Prep debate, but the rugby shirt really does not belong in the Ivy wardrobe.  (I've just bought some Vintage Vines blue cords: the best you can say about them is they're 'something and nothing': not unlike Bill's - oh, I don't mean in structure, but similarly odd in cut: my seamstress is going to have to work hard on these.  They're 'Prep', no question, but will pass muster for knocking about in and work, I suppose).

Now, the question is, will anyone put their hand up to liking these monstrosities?  Do the dread words 'rugby' and 'shirt' mean anything different in Vermont or Kentucky to on these shores?  Here: youth with curly hair, likes his pint and kebab, studying mechanical engineering, Coldplay fan, pretty homophobic.  There?

Prove me wrong.

Re: The Rugby Shirt

A rugby shirt is just a useful heavier weight top for Winter. Uniqlo had some decent size ones that you could actually fit into a few years ago. No logos. I have a green one with a white collar - like the Irish shirt, but without the advertising.

I saw someone wearing similar at the Kingston beer festival on Friday.

Old with straight hair, likes his pint.......

I couldn't agree more Mr Pony. Total anathema to me. Those shirts have probably have a slightly different connotation around my neck of the woods in that they are certainly not confined to the posh school rugger bugger types - they are in fact everywhere you look more's the pity. Loathe them on so many levels!

Re: The Rugby Shirt

I think there's photographic evidence of me wearing one here. Didn't look very good and I haven't worn it since...

Re: The Rugby Shirt

They may fit in the canon somewhere but not in my wardrobe. A truly heinous piece of clothing.

Nice picture. Yeah, I rarely offer such proclamations. Perhaps I am unwittingly being influenced by some of our English brothers here. Heh

Re: The Rugby Shirt

They are worn by all the posh kids at my university, WITH collars popped I hassen to add. These posh kids have no style in the slightest: see Scruffy baggy hoodies, pyjama trousers worn outside paired with flip flops and a silly wooly hat in the summer!

Re: The Rugby Shirt

There used to be a rugby supply place in Falls Church, Va. A warehouse, basically. I think the Odious Googleplex is there now. I'm talking 1984 or so.

They had sturdy cotton shorts with deep pockets and a snap plus drawstring, and big thick rugby shirts in solids and big stripes, white collars, and sort of rubbery buttons.

They were great for layering in cold weather. I wore them fishing a lot. Warm and substantial. No logos or anything. Very basic. If they still existed I'd get a couple in solid colors.

PS: I got suckered into playing rugby once. Broke my nose on someone's swinging foot.
