Grenfell trench coat

A few have mentioned this brand.

I have an Aquascutum fly front and a good trench coat from the days when Marks used to sell decent stuff, otherwise I might be interested in this.

I do not see a belt in the photos though.

Re: Grenfell trench coat

Interesting Kingstonian.  I saw a similar coat in J Simons on my last visit for either £450 or £495.

I managed to pick up a Grenfell in midnight blue SB with fly front in my local Oxfam shop.  Hardly worn and just my size (40).  I had the sleeves shortened and had my tailor put in a nice little chain to hang it from (not that I ever would of course) and so for about £30 I have a lovely addition to my wardrobe.

Mine bears a Royal Warrant but I see this example on ebay appears not to.  Do they still enjoy a Warrant?  Are they still made in England?

Yes, and no Royal Warrant now as far as I can see.

Re: Grenfell trench coat

Grenfell was one of the great names.  I had a Grenfell trench years ago.

"Looking good and dressing well is a necessity. Having a purpose in life is not."  Oscar Wilde

Re: Grenfell trench coat

Grenfell was sold to a Japanese Spinning company by D. Haythornthwaite in 1991, they only traded the name in Japan.

Grenfell was then bought by British individuals, and brought back to the UK in 2002. It is not under foreign ownership as stated by Mr Haythornthwaite, this can be checked on the Companies House website.

The Grenfell brand name still bears HM The Queens Royal Warrant, and still supply the Royal Household. Recently, they have produced garments for Highgrove House, for HM The Prince of Wales.

The original Grenfell factory in Burnly was sold to clothing manufacturer Mackintosh, whom still reside there.

When buying Grenfell products off J Simons, assure it bears the Grenfell label, and not Bramble or his own label, Mr Simons likes to tell porkies when it comes to selling goods, pulling it off as 'Grenfell produced' garments.

A few styles can be bought off the suitsmen website, i have also heard, Grenfell's own website will be up and running very soon with their online shop, currently it only displays the brands history which needs updating.

www.grenfelluk.com

On speaking to a spokesperson for the Brand, Grenfell products are looking to be relaunched on a nationwide scale, including retailers such as: Harrods of Knigtsbridge, Debenhams, Cordings of Piccadilly and many more.
All of which over the coming years.

Grenfell is still a great name, and it is coming back...

The world of snide Grenfells.  I would not have thought the brand was sufficiently popular to warrant knock offs.

The 'genuine' coats seem almost reasonably priced compared to what Burberry ask for trench coats.

My old Marks and Sparks trenchcoat, bought in a sale, seems even more of a bargain these days.

Re: Grenfell trench coat

I have two Grenfell raincoats:  a "Campbell" model SB Balmacaan I purchased from J. Simons while visiting London, as well as the Windsor trench offered through suitsmenco.uk.

Both are top notch products.  I'm not sure how they compare to the Grenfell of decades ago, but they're very nice in and of themselves.

Just like the Troy shirts at J. Press aren't Troy shirts.

Ben Silver? Many claims were once made for that company. I can't say that I rate them.

Re: Grenfell trench coat

Can anyone explain the price differential between the coat Ben Silver are selling and that being offered by O'Connells?

Re: Grenfell trench coat

Edourd... Haythornthwaite & Sons family business is still in operation, i do not know where your information was attained from? As said, the Royal Warrant was handed to Haythornthwaite & Sons Ltd '' Manufacturers of Grenfell Garments'' as displayed under the warrant. How can Grenfell products be produced otherwise? They cant... It is illegal, unless stated by the owners, whom i know it isnt. Grenfell garments are produced in a Grenfell factory, they are currently based in East London. Edourd if you know something we dont, please do enlighten, im sure the owners will be delighted to know. They pride themselves on producing High Quality products... nothing like the cheap tat burberry these days produce.

BulldogNH - The Bramble 'G9' at J Simons is a cheaper version of the Harrington by Grenfell. The Bramble is produced abroad, very cheap quality, but extremely overpriced by mr simons. He tries to pull it off as 'Grenfell produced'. Mr Simons recently took a delivery of the Bramble produced G9 with his own label... I think Mr simons wants to be part of the race!

The Grenfells sold by o'connells are not made from Grenfell Cloth, the cloth has been out of production since 1999, only over the last year has research being done into it again, as the cloth was only produced in the original Grenfell factory in Burnley, Lancashire. It will be back on the market in a year or two.

Re: Grenfell trench coat

Both my Bramble G9 and my J. Simons G9 say "Made in Britain".

Please reference the link in post #5 > "Grenfell" > "Grenfell Today" Thank you.

I'm subject to correction, but it would seem to the impartial observer that Mr. Haywhatzit is a somewhat better informed and more objective source than.....................?

Re: Grenfell trench coat

I wonder if the point is the difference between Grenfell products and Grenfell produced products?
A thing can be made by Grenfell and yet not be a Grenfell?

To say a thing was made by Grenfell would then remain true. Only if you said that it was a Grenfell G9 would you be telling porkies.

It's playing with language, I know.

Re: Grenfell trench coat

Fred... The Bramble was part produced in the UK, the label/swing tickets states 'Made In Britain,' this is perfectly allowed by the Home Office and the Department of Trade and Investment. But the J Simons Harrington was produced abroad as the normal price was too much for Mr Simons. If he has put the 'Made In Britain' label afterwards, that is his desire. The design of the Harrington belongs to Grenfell. Im not too sure where exactly abroad they were produced, but i suspect somewhere in North Africa.

Russel St.. i ask myself the same question, a thing can be made by Grenfell and yet not be a Grenfell? The only Grenfell factory produces Grenfell garments, if other labels are looking for manufacturing, or Grenfell products to be related to them, Grenfell therefore can have two labels placed on the jacket, one Grenfell label, and one of the retailers. J Simons store is based on Russel Street isnt it?

There is no such thing as a Grenfell 'G9' hence the quote marks... It is called a Harrington, the Americans refer to this style as the 'G9' as originally named after the Baracuda G9.

I would only be saying this as i previously worked for a Mystery Shopper company, and had sent in a mystery shopper to J Simons. He told the shopper that the Bramble was the same as a Grenfell, produced by the same people. I rely my information on field research, hence the quote on the forum.

But as you said, its playing with language... I heard a while back on another one of these forums the troubles J Simons was in financially, was this true? I think a year or two ago... It would be a shame to lose them, having such vast stock...

Re: Grenfell trench coat

BulldogNH... The Bramble are good jackets, but, the Grenfell Harringtons are made to a higher quality. I am not too sure when you spoke to them, but they are available on: 0044 207 537 7600
The actual Grenfell Cloth had many recommendations, still to this day, and the first samples are being re-produced as we speak. They are also looking to Relaunch the Grenotex fabric, which is the Grenfell Cloth with a PU Coating, making it totally waterproof. All of which will be available during next year and following. I am not too sure if they are going to have an official launch, but i suspect they must, i heard something about holding an event at Buckingham Palace if allowed.

Grenfell products are manufactured to a high standard... Buy one to see for yourself...
