What will the eventual owner of that shirt do with it? 'Curate' it? Sniff its essence? Give it a biscuit? 'Holy Grail' is an interesting idea but I generally want something I can throw into the washing machine without worrying.
I note that the bid price has increased. Now at £22. My guess is, it'll hit around £80 - just about the price I paid for a pair of bleeding Madras shirts in 2011. They spent more time in a plastic bowl in the sink than on my back.
Some amusing moments trawling Ebay. Last night - 'USA-made'. A quick search reveals a label clearly stating 'Made In China'.
A poly/cotton shirt - 'Oxford' - being bid on. Up to £30. Are these 'cult' items? What might a 1960s 'arrington fetch?
But is any of it 'Ivy League'? Hardly 'Yale In 'Manhattan'' territory. Makes you stop and think.
'Wren' shirt now at £30 and with plenty of time to spare.
A not unpleasant vintage Abercrombie and Fitch jacket on Ebay with a starting bid of £35. Looks pretty Ivy to these eyes.
Union made Golden Bear jacket on US Ebay. Very nice, judging by the photograph.
The 'Wren' shirt is now up to £56 with at least a couple of days to go. Who is involved in the bidding?
Stanley Blacker jacket on offer (Ebay US). In my 'Watch List', hence the discount offer.
‘Union made Golden Bear jacket on US Ebay. Very nice, judging by the photograph.’
There are 411 Golden Bear jackets on eBay.com
Expensive 'striped' jacket, not, I don't think, their usual offering. Searching 'Highest Price/Shipping' first ought to get you there.
Has Ebay largely 'had its day' - especially the American site? I expect people on here are finding other, more reliable online sources.
I never had much to do with Etsy clotheswise, just bought books and odds and sods.
When I mentioned the idea of bidding for secondhand clothing to John Simons years ago, the expression on his face was a picture.
It's usually a lot cheaper than buying secondhand clothing from him.
I missed seeing the 'Wren' shirt end. Anyone know what it finally went for?
I almost bought an old 'Geoffrey Scott' at the weekend, but the bargain price would have become far less of a bargain with shipping and customs so I passed.
This isn't on ebay or etsy but I thought it worth posting but not on a new thread.... I went to the outlet place in Portsmouth yesterday, ' Gun Wharf Quays', in the vain hope of picking up some old stock chinos/cords/trousers in PRL or (whisper it) gant, thought I may see something that wasn't stretch or skinny, no luck,
But, in PRL there were a bunch of unstructured wool herringbone jackets,36,38,40,42", light grey herringbone, two patch pockets with flaps, breast pocket wasn't patch, pleasingly single vent, 2/3 roll, very much like the Keydge wool jackets, very slight darts , hardly noticeable in the h'bone pattern, and 4 button cuffs, some marked £70, others £80, marked RRP was ( I think) £450'ish, tried on both the 40 & 42, I fell somewhere between the 2 sizes, and TBH I have enough jackets, I guess they ticked 75% of the ' Ivy' boxes, and there was a nice blue check shirt with a chest pocket, NO Logo, nice collar roll but didn't seem a bargain at £90, and I'm expecting bargains in those sort of places, I should have bought 2-3 of the jackets and knocked them out on here for £195 ! hehe
Sebago penny loafers 7.5 UK size on Ebay. USA-made.
@Staxfan - thanks for the tip, I’m on a course in Pompey in a few days time so I’ll have a look in there.
Staxfan, I know the Ralph style you mention well. They also crop up in TK Maxx occasionally. They are typically really well made and feature some great fabric. The ones Made in Italy are/were made by Cornealani.
Unfortunately the down side is that they’re mostly Custom Fit now.Ralph’s name for a more fitted silhouette.
Getting the shoulders to fit can also be problematic particularly if you choose to size up from your normal chest.
You might have found a rare jacket that has all the details and isn’t CF though.
Woof - I’m sure they’ll still be on the rack, not what the average outlet shopper is looking for, they were in the sale section,
Alvey- I think you’re right they are Italian made, I’m sure I see that on the label, I’ve had/have Corneliani jackets and they are superbly made,
I tried one on at Bicester Village.Superb fabric but unfortunately they’re not cut for the middle aged.
Brooks USA made popover (maybe more than one) on Ebay com. I searched under 'university stripe'. The shirts are reasonably priced (seller seems to specialise in Brooks) but the postage and customs charges will drive the price close to £100 I should have thought. Might be worth considering, though.
