Beginning on 1/1/10 I will stop writing in. To a degree I feel like the bastard father of all of these sites. I was an original writer into Goreppy which eventually had a catagory about clothes, and ay some gave birth to Harris or Skip or Skippy or wahtever. I know I suggested that he was so learned he should write into Askandy. It is what it is. Askandy sprung up eventually but gopreppy was talking about style in maybe 1996, if I had to guess.
I have thought a lot about clothes and style in the intervening years. much of what I have to say will not be welcomed by the hosts. The world has changed. and it will change again.
I have to figure out a bigger space for my views. But if I am allowed: I will put up my very best stuff from now untill the end of the year.
Let me begin by saying that free trade has been a disaster for this country. Free trade only benefits exporting country. This mantra of free trade has been an unmitigated disaster for America. There was a time when we consumed everything that we produced. Now we are anamored of slave type asian labor. Cheap goods cheaply made has been the american mantra since 1995. We, as a country, for the last 15 years, have stopped producing goods and have only produced paper. Until our country starts making things, our standard of living will deteriorate , just like it has for the last 15 years. We are able to buy cheap junk, while the stuff a proper society values gets more and more expensive.

Point two: These web sites are a monument to the past. Our fashion will come, just like it has for the last 50 years, from California. No one will wear suits and ties 40 years from now. No one will wear ties 25 years from now. The money will be made in asia in the future. Even I am smart enough to know where to look to the future. There will be no ties. get with it.
Tom, as an original member of what was to become the 'SFRP' on the old GoPreppy site, is right to call himself the father of much of what has followed online. This is especially true of the 'Trad' phenomenon.
Tom used the term 'Trad' from Flusser's (correct) usage of it on GoPreppy where young Skip/Skippy/Harris latched onto it and also onto Tom.
Harris, being young and in a hurry, never did the homework though, never did all the background work and so his take on Trad was... what it is. Wafer thin.
Had Harris learned more from Tom then we would now have a better 'Trad'. One more rooted in reality.
The Net is a theatrical place. Different 'roles', diferent 'voices' declaiming different monologues. Tom always stayed very consistant in my opinion. I look forward to anything he has to say before he stops.
When last I talked to Sally Fowler on the 'Preppy Journal' site she remembered Tom with great affection. Skip/Skippy/Harris just didn't feature for her.

Why the theatrics? Anyone that has contributed as much and has spent as much time and effort as tmc22 deserves to be able to go out with a little theatricality. He's going out with a bang, better to burn out than fade away. Good luck to you mate. Thanks for all your posts.
I have no objection to a bit of theatricality, but what we have so far hardly merits the description. The demise of American manufacturing, the fact that that suits and ties have a life expectancy roughly equivalent to that of a bone cancer patient, and the rise of Asia are hardly news. Come on, tmc22! If you're going supernova on us, really cut loose.
Apart from maybe half a dozen people does anyone here know what the hell you are talking about, or even care that much? Sorry to be rude, but really! Talk about self-aggrandisement...

I do agree with Big Tony. If you're gonna go out with guns blazing...

I am resplendent in divergence. Bring on the shopping carts. Scram, boys — I'll meet up with ya at the barbershop later.
^That one was on a Robert Fripp album. Great track.
Its not only America that's going for the burn out, its Great Britain. Its odd how we have transferred all our manufacturing to a totalitarian communist country. The next phase is about to hit, the middle class jobs. They're starting to go, as these nations start doing it for themselves, all the managerial, administration, high tech design and engineering. Got a masters degree, that ain't gonna' save you from the scrap heap.
I'm in engineering construction for the oil & gas, and I fight everyday, in my small way, to keep manufacturing in Europe. Almost daily I get reports of valve failures, castings cracking up on first cycles, dodgy QC reports signed off by several third party inspectors, gamma radiation contamination in stainless steel, etc, etc, all from China and India. But it doesn't matter, even factoring in the shoddyness, the risk, the failures, its cheaper than the West. But is it as good, ofcourse not, the quality isn't there.
And is this the future, a world without artisans and useable skills in the West? Our leaders need to start reading Shelley and Blake, instead of scamming the system like the UK politicians. Or as William Burroughs stated, time to storm the reality studio and splice the tape deck. Hurry up gentlemen, its time.....
Its about Quality, do we value it, or not? The same with clothes and style, will we all end up wearing cheap shoes with plastic gold plated buckles? The West has said quite clearly, no we don't value quality, lets make a quick buck and move to Singapore. Nations? We're vulture capitalists, who gives a fuck.
Meanwhile, our soldiers are bogged down in guerilla and kamakazee suicide war, and our politicians and leaders act not in our nation's interest but quietly, assuringly, destroy our future from within.

And after us, The Curriculum and so many other blogs came too ...
