In the `70s I believe the term was unisex- there are still a number of hair salons that declare themselves to be so.

Perhaps, or maybe, he meant uni wear as to what passes for style at the university or college bar.  Is there a difference between the sartorial flair in a red brick and grey brick uni, and all those polytechnics and colleges who became "unis" overnight.
