Re: PeaCoat Weather

... I think that the Ivy cap is a part of all this too.

It ought to be a 'Grandad' item, but when you wear it with a bit of spunk it changes.

^definitely.

back at the duffle thing: when worn with an ocbd, crewneck, dark denims & oxblood full wings + topped with a neat, smart college boy haircut a duffle coat is far from being crusty / studenty / general shampoo avoider.

I reckon what John Simons says there pretty much matches how I view ivy, be it regarding harringtons, shawl collar cardigans or a duffle coat.

Re: PeaCoat Weather

i'd agree with colin regarding duffle coats, but then again I did just pick one up a few months ago.

Chilly this midwest morning, and thanks to this thread I pulled out my old peacoat instead of the duffle, no regrets

Some people hate the English, I don't, they're just wankers. We, on the other hand, were colonized by wankers, Can't even pick a decent culture to be colonized by...

Re: PeaCoat Weather

I wonder if anyone can dredge up the pic of Tom Rath in a J. Press cotton duffle posted some months back. Definitely avoided the soap-dodger connotations with mucho dash.

I find the duffle far more versatile than the peacoat in that it can be dressed up or down. I wouldn't consider wearing a peacoat with anything other than the most casual of ensembles.

The Pea Coat is a wonderful garment though, and the evolution of the spec. throughout recent naval history is illuminating. If you have ever handled one from the middle of the twentieth century you would never consider a civilian or recent military model. It's chalk versus cheese.

In France, similar jackets are known by the name Caban and in Germany they are known as Colani. The name comes from the Kiel tailors Berger & Colani, who provided the Kaiser's navy with these jackets since the end of the 19th century.

Brass buttons? Not sure if I could pull that one off. Navy deck jackets sound good.
