I think, sometimes, there are some tricky balancing acts to be performed; which I largely now avoid; not invariably.  I'm sure GG once talked about 'frumpishness' as part of The Look.  He may correct me if I'm wrong.  I think there's something in that.  I still think of The Look as 'square'.  No, don't laugh.  Anti-mod?  JS gets the balance right effortless; so does GG from the little I've seen him in 'real life'.  Not sure I've ever seen an actual beatnik, just rather grubby-looking boho types.
