Continental Style 5: Alain Delon

Delon, like Belmondo, had a definite influence upon the circa 1960 mod scene.  Ask about either of them in Paris now, though, you tend to get the famous 'Gallic shrug'.  Which is perhaps why Italy is cooler than France.

Re: Continental Style 5: Alain Delon

Watched Le Samourai not long ago, and remembered how fascinated I used to be by those old Citroën DS cars, quite a few around in the early eighties. It was called "the Frog" in these parts of the world for some reason. Roland Barthes compared it to a Gothic cathedral and called it "one of those objects from another universe", "a new Nautilus" ... Don't drive myself, my eyes are too screwed up, so it may be sour grapes but I truly detest most of the cars on the roads nowadays.

I believe Delon was never in any of the Nouvelle Vague films. Good for him. For anyone who hasn't seen it I thoroughly recommend Plein soleil - one of my all time favourite films. In fact I even took the DVD to Latin America with me. Delon is absolutely superb in it and the remastered DVD also has a good documentary as I recall.

Melodie en sous-sol from 1963 is another good one. Delon and Gabin are the leads - what a combination. It used to and still may be available cheaply on dvd.

The plot is standard fare I suppose but still well worth a watch. I vaguely recall some very good clothing. Gabin of course another absolute giant of French cinema.
