Check out that study of him aboard his boat at the back of Graham Marsh's book: Sausalito 1954: the hair, the glasses, the smile, the simple white t-shirt. Just beautiful.
I'm with you 100% there Mr Rip - you're talking about my hero, or one of my heroes I should say. That photo in particular is very inspiring, as is the man's music (to me anyway). My 2 completely unrelated interests - Latin music and boom years ivy style - find synthesis.
I suspect we shall never know what footwear he was sporting in the photo you mention.

Ooooh Cal Tjader, now you're talking - there's a picture of him wearing what looks like a grey flannel suit, with a rep tie and those glasses, leaning over his vibes - cool as fook. But the music - that's the thing, a bluesey, jazzy, latin melange - what more do you want ffs!?!
Cal tjader and eddie palmieri: come an get it, is one of the finest tunes ever commited to wax. As is the the bamboleate lp. great syle that man.

I've got all his stuff tucked away somewhere. Time to get it out...
I should have read your description more thoroughly Senor Harpo, that's another inspiring photo.
It's the fourth photo down that Rip was referring to:

I reckon Evans' rather attractive wife must have weaned him off the junk for a while, maybe shoved some carbs into him, advised him to invest in some nice, funky orange shirts fit for the 1970s. Big mistake.
A bump for this - for his continuing adherence to The Look? I wonder if he might have been barefoot in that celebrated photograph?
I like this baggy shirts look. But wait, Christ! Stan almost looks like he is modelling for Mikkel Rude!
Stan looks good in that, same pink shirt and black tank top that Marky Murphy wears on the cover of 'Rah!'
Beatnik's recent talk of bongos has got me all latin jazzed and revved up and I went straight from work to purchase some rare congas, cowbells, maracas, jawbone, vibes, timbales and African drum ultra rare groove inspired latin jazz percussion including: Stitt Goes Latin, The Latin Jazz Quintet, Herbie Mann's African Suite and Jazz Comittee for Latin American Affairs. No Cal Tjader on these albums, but still great perscussion: Ray Mantilla, Jose Manguel, Carlos Valdes, Victor Pantoja, Vance Anderson, whoever he is and a few other keepers of the sacred beat. And the beat goes on and the beat goes on......
I think when you slap it with a close cut trouser and no break the contrast is really cool.
Just look out for anything by Lands End made in the 90's to my knowledge they will be huge.
