Ivy League Rock & Pop...
This is a bit sketchy & needs filling out later -
Ivy in London started as a G.I. / 'Jazz' look, and then...
Charlie Watts wore Ivy from Austins in Shaftsbury Avenue.
Georgie Fame shopped there & also got Madras jackets for all his band.
Eric Clapton was a big fan & also introduced fellow members of The Yardbirds to the shop.
Pete Meaden took The Who there to buy Ivy League jackets when they were still The High Numbers.
Paul Weller shopped at J.Simons and probably still does. The Style Council briefly played with the style, The Jam never did.
Christmas '87 I was in The Ivy Shop when Pete Townshend bought a couple of pairs of Sebago Beefrolls there.
Dexy's Midnight Runners played with the Preppy/Ivy style in '85. Kevin Rowland had been a Squire Shop (Another John Simons shop) customer in '69 & had remembered The Look. Along with Billy Adams, Mr. Rowland often got The Look spot-on - probably the best Anglo-Ivy look in Rock/Pop since Charlie & Eric.
Can't say I like much of the above's music - Charlie is better than The Stones deserve. There was no Yardbirds after Eric left. The Who & Paul Weller are magpies, although I respect Pete Townshend as an artist. Kevin Rowland is an overlooked stylist, but he comes from a different direction to me musically - He has far more integrity than I do anyway. Georgie Fame 'ripped off' (he didn't really, of course) Mose & others... but he did it well, with style & charm, so he's OK by me.
Probably there are others for this list.
What did Van Morrison wear? Where did he buy it?

To some degree, Marshall Crenshaw in the early 80s. Looked (and sang) like Buddy Holly, wore sportcoat and tortoise-rim glasses on stage in the era of Thriller outfits.

A bit off topic, but Ivy was HUGE in Jamaica where certain elements of the look mutated into Rude Boy style.
So that was another influence in London post war, especially in the lead up into what became the 'Skinhead' mutation of the Ivy style in the late 60s.
Too lazy to look up the year, but lots of West Indians came to town with their own take on the Ivy style in the 50's. They were then copied by working class white boys with an eye for style and yet another new element was added to the mix over here.
So in England Ivy is Black, Working Class, Jazz inspired, Modernist, Gay, Jewish ... All sorts of things. What it isn't over here & never was is an 'upper-class' look.

Here's an old one:
The Black and White 'Two-Tone Records' cartoon man that graced the record labels of British Ska revivalist bands in 1979 was pinched from an early 'Wailers' LP. 'The Wailers' in turn pinched their image from Curtis Mayfield's Impressions in just the same way that 'The Chords' pinched their 'So Far Away' LP cover from a 'Spencer Davis Group' cover fom the 60's...
'Pinched' is the wrong word... I just mean that these groups paid homage to each other (!).
So what is my point here?
