Just finished reading a biography of Francis Coppola, in which George Lucas is mentioned quite a bit, and I couldn't help thinking - again - about 'American Graffiti'. Somewhere, I have a publicity shot or something of Richard Dreyfuss wearing - what? A check shirt, untucked over a white t? Chinos? Sneakers? Maybe the shirt is a Sir Guy, maybe not, I don't know. Dreyfuss looks good, whatever. Now, Kenny Lovegrove of J.Simons sometimes put me in mind of 'All-American Boy', but growing older. Oh, all right, I was having a pop at 'Americana' not so long ago, but that's only because of some of the dodgy shops I go into. It's still 'Boom Years' stuff to some extent, isn't it? Is it still seen in the US, though?
yeah.
Often? Genuine rather than retro piss-take?
yeah.
The trouble with shamrockmonkey was, he always had too much to say for himself.
He needed open questions, why?
Ah, Dennis MacNamara, the Chicago plumber. Remember those lists? A work of art they were. So you sent him $100, picked out half a dozen items, and a few weeks later you opened up the big box, allowing the Chicago fleas and cockroaches to jump out first, followed by a very American range of brands - London Fog, Nettleton, American Gentleman, Sero etc.. Some real gems were acquired along with a fair few bits of Made in USA tat. But the process was fun, and Dennis was a cool cat to interact with. Hope he's doing OK.
Then others came along who were more organized and the fun went out of it. But, while it lasted, it was wonderful.
farrago was also a good source. I wore the Mercer shirt he acquired for me to my daughter's second wedding. The seller, over on Ebay Com., wouldn't ship outside the United States, so farrago bought it on my behalf.
I think he's still around. Dennis - probably not.
