White Socks

White Socks yes

American in Paris so I don't care. This autumn with my black Wiguns(80's version of weejuns) 2nd worldly war chinos and white socks I think its smiley time or I'll look seriously mentally misfortunate but one of the two. I shall report back the degree of personnal insults, violence and wheelchair kicking but....

good luck at least tweed time is here

Hubert

Re: White Socks

I still think they look nice with loafers, though I no longer wear them.  In fact, a la Marsh/Toffeeman, I rarely wear socks with them at all.  It might be only my fevered imagination, but I think I may have seen a picture of Chet Baker wearing thick white socks with loafers.

Re: White Socks

Talking of socks, I've had the devil's own job finding anything in bottle green or navy blue.  Anything decent, that is.  The mincing old queens and wide boys who run the nearest 'mens' wear' emporium offer Falke - but not necessarily in your size, dear boy - and it's always too much trouble to make a simple phone call, isn't it?  They still think Ralphie and Hilfiger are the biz.

Interesting direction Hubert. And a brave one too. I'll pay your hospital bills.

Big with the Shoreditch trendies with silly shoes. Good to see you reviving the Saxone 'Weegian'.

Great tweed at the launch last week but did you notice that Jason J, the Ivy ace face, was in NAVY BLUE socks. Oh yes!

Re: White Socks

Sorry to say this but white socks are the mark of a 1980s' London barrow-boy turned stock trader. Just bring on the cutaway loafers and a smack of Brylcreem.

Re: White Socks

none i know of. theyre cream colored wool crew athletic socks. i think a merino and acrylic/nylon blend. fox valley. they cost 6 dollars a pair, and come in S,M,L, and XL. ive never seen the wigwam ones that fade to cream, but am intrigued.

Re: White Socks

White are too stark, albeit clean-looking (thanks, Elmsy!).  Cream sounds better.  Something changing subtly from just off-white to cream sounds better still.

Re: White Socks

I only wear white socks with canvas tennis shoes these days.

I do admire the look with Weejuns however and used to do it myself.

Gray socks to work, no socks outside of it.

Re: White Socks

White socks have made a big comeback around the universities in South London which, goes hand in hand with the other Ivy trends circulating around the art school campuses: chinos, button downs, vintage style 'sports' jackets. Of course as with many trends most of the people wearing them don't actually know where they originate and prefer to think it's something unique to their generation.

Personally I'm hesitant about white socks. I think you need to be conscious of the impact they make on an outfit, especially if you're going for dark colors. Say for example navy trousers such as those worn by Gene Kelly in An American In Paris; although, this is a bias view as I detest the man and much of his wardrobe. In this instance heavy contrast just doesn't work and I'm far more in favor of the classic pairing with natural/cream colored chinos, and brown loafers. However, I'm about to eat my words in citing one example where the contrast works very well. This can be found in Take Ivy with the picture of a young man striding to class with notebook in hand adoring a navy jumper, white cotton trousers, white socks and black loafers.

Finally, some may find this to be a very rude and annoying remark but, I personally think white socks are more representative of a relaxed style that suits the young far better. To put it bluntly, if you're over 40 and wearing white socks regularly you're desperately clinging to your youth or have failed to realize you've aged considerably since your school days. Especially if you're wearing them with faded light blue denim jeans (yuck!).

Do you go to Goldsmiths per chance? I ask because seemingly only G.S students are proud of being from New Cross. (My appologies if this is not the case!)
Re socks: I prefer Gene's teaming of them with khakis and Weejuns though in general i feel far too Wacko Jacko when wearing them.

Re: White Socks

White socks no.  Not at my time of life.  Would look too much like bandages.  Is it true they could only be worn once?  I've still no idea who Hubert is or whether he's still in Rome sipping espresso.  But I think he might be wearing my enigmatic Brooks mac.  Gibson?

Re: White Socks

Hubert is alive and well and has settled down with his nurse in a little end of terrace in Walthamstow. He spends his days sipping Fernet Branca and watching old Jenny Agutter movies. He still wears tweed for 10 months of the year, but the white sock thing never really took off.
