Clearly the best compromise is to speak like an American but to adopt Britishisms or words that you think are Britishisms and throw them into your speech and writing without the slightest regard for meaning or context. Bonus points for sighing with weary condescension when an American uses and American English word to describe something that has a more exciting UK synonym.
