Re: Perfect, Tapered, High-Waisted, Flat-Fronted 100% Cotton Chinos

I'm with Woofboxer, the JS's ones in the shop (may still be there) are perfect, no additional tailoring other than shortening required: high-waisted, flat front and tapered to the Ivy ideal.

Unlike the 1942 edition chinos from Buzz which require major surgical incisions, they're high-waisted alright, but extraordinarily baggy in keeping 100% to the original specification. My local town tailor is struggling to find a solution, but we shall see next weekend. I find with the Rickson gear it becomes addictive, despite the issues of keeping completely with the authentic specification which doesn't always translate perfectly into fit or longevity of zips.

high-waisted chinos from uniqlo? I thought they were firmly riding the low-waisted wave?

I prefer the British khaki colour to lighter sandy colours

What is the perfect fit?

High rise , over 11 inches or more or less?

Cuff opening, 9 inches or 8 or something else?

Knee 10 inches?

Thigh?

A bit of science here instead of mysticism.

I quite like:

11" rise,
13" hip
11" knee
8" at the cuff.
Zip fly

/\  Just an old pair of dirt cheap LL Bean ones.

I would say that my JS chinos are pretty much my ideal, however I have a pair from russell street for about £70,in chiltern st I got the new ones for £140. Both seem pretty much identical, so is it the price of cotton, the higher rent, italy vs england or taking the piss?

Re: Perfect, Tapered, High-Waisted, Flat-Fronted 100% Cotton Chinos

Bizarrely enough (I have only been to the old JS shop once and the new shop twice and he has no idea who I am) I actually know the answer to this one - it came up in conversation when I was at his new shop.  The Russell St chinos were made by a UK company who specialised in making uniforms so were making them very cheaply.  So cheaply in fact that they went out of business, meaning JS chinos are now made in Italy.  Apparently the new chinos have a lower mark up, despite selling for much more.

Incidentally, I will sound a dissenting note on JS chinos - though very nice looking, in my waist size they were far too tight elsewhere.

As Bean have yet again stopped doing the only decent chinos in their extensive collection I am once again searching.  (I may try Uniqlo, although they only do them in olive in my size, which looks a bit too dark.)

Re: Perfect, Tapered, High-Waisted, Flat-Fronted 100% Cotton Chinos

I was careful, too, when Theo suggested that they were pretty snug. He advised to size up or I should try them. Gotta try them on. The LL Bean ones that Talk Ivy sugguested are roomy enough for well hung chaps like Jimbo and me.

I like both my old "dorky chinos" with their big pockets and "preacher cut" a la Bill's and the standard department store ones I got.

Just got a couple of decent ones from a forum member for about nothing. Made In Sri Lanka. Made In Germany, Italy or the UK or

Made in US will be harder.

O'Connells was an advice. Never tried them, but I trust the man. Probably as expensive as Bill's.

Dockers was another advice. I'd like to try them as well as I also trust the other advice. Probably way cheaper.

I reckon the O'Connell's will definitely be high enough, maybe not as tapered as RPR wants, while the Dockers are moderately tapered but maybe not as high rise as RPR wants...

My main appendage needs the 11" and 13" for comfort, so I'd say it's around 12" . Erect? Never measured it.

a 12" or 13" rise is just as well or even better with my "tummy", 9" bottoms are also fine with me, just as it's alright to have 'em tapered to less than 8", I guess.

What about the cuff?

I know that Jimbo prefers them uncuffed, now...

Levis made and crafted Sander chinos, 100% cotton, cinch back, 11" rise, 12" thigh, 8" at cuff.

I just bought a pair recently in a lovely dark green and they are my favorite trousers at the moment, the fit is spot on for me.

I've seen them priced from £120 - £150 so worth shopping around.

^Bugger! I forgot about those options before I bought the Buzz Rickson ones at an extortionate price.

I have not tried them (yet) but these look good - http://www.silvermans.co.uk/ProductDetails/tabid/89/Department/Military/Category/TROUSERS+++SHORTS/Description/CLASSIC+CHINO+TROUSERS/ItemId/13545/CurrentPage/0/Default.aspx

Re: Perfect, Tapered, High-Waisted, Flat-Fronted 100% Cotton Chinos

I tried the Uniqlo olive chinos last week but for me the rise is too low.  The JS fit on the other hand is perfect if you can bite your lip and overlook the insane price - from that point of view it's a good thing that they are always out of stock.
