Hi. I am writing to ask everyone's advice on dressing for a trip to London. I will be in London in the last week of October until the first week in November. I will be wearing suits often. I am from Miami and rarely have to wear a coat on top of my suit. I have a heavy cashmere coat that I had made for winter time weather when I travel to NYC or Chicago, but I do not have a medium weight or light weight top coat. Based on average London temperatures, the high temperature in London during the time that I will be visiting will be in the middle fifties. The low temperature will be in the mid-to-high forties. Most of my suits are a mid-weight wool. I think I will need to wear some type of coat if I am walking around in the city, particularly if I am walking at night. If I am correct in that assumption, what type of coat would I wear? I am leaving on October 20, so I will not have time to have a coat made. If I need a coat, I will have to purchase one.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you very much.
Rob

You'll need something that'll keep out wind n' rain. Although snow can come early like last year. Thing is your not going to be hard pushed to find one if you need one when you are here, although the exchange rate isn't in your favour.
How about a raincoat with a good thick wool lining? Add a scarf, hat & gloves as the weather requires. And a brolly.
I didn't think about rain... I would like a black coat that could work over a suit or a tuxedo. I looked online last night for coats. I looked at bergdorfgoodman.com and neimanmarcus.com. I didn't see anything that seemed reasonable. I don't want to pay $2,500 for a ready-to-wear coat. ...If I only had time to have one made.
Does anyone have any suggestions are to where i might look for a coat online? I would like a coat that, while it would not be bespoke, would look good with my suits and tuxedo. I hate the thought of my bespoke tuxedos (and you all KNOW what they cost) perhaps being diminished by an off-the-rack coat. One of my tuxedos is very dark blue. But I guess a black coat, while not ideal, would work with that.
Thank you both very much for taking the time to respond to my post.

I'm not sure if this is some highly advanced level of spamming, or you are genuine? I can't imagine you'd really struggle to find such a coat, if you were as committed to clothing as your outlay on bespoke tuxedo suggests. To give you the benefit of the doubt though. Wait till you get over here, go down Bond Street and treat yourself. At least then you'd be trying the thing on.
Will you be bringing both Blue and Black Tuxedos to London? Would a dark Charcoal Grey overcoat cover most cases in that case?
The trick will be in finding an overcoat suitable for evening wear that will also work during the day. Levels of formality differ so much from day to evening, even now.
Could you tell us a little more about your suits, please? Their colours and textures would be useful to know.
Thank you -
James.
But to re-wind to your original question - Yes, I think you will need some sort of outerwear.
Talk Ivy, the suits that I will wear will be primarily black and grey. Some pinstripes some solids. I tend to prefer black over grey, but you are right that a charcoal overcoat would look very nice with both tuxedes.
Oo Bop - No, I am not a spammer. (Would a spammer go to this much trouble? lol) Actually, perhaps, stupidly, I had not thought of buying the coat once I am in London. I guess I would prefer to buy the coat here and not have to worry about it when I arrive. However, my hotel is just a couple of blocks from Saville Row so what you are saying makes perfect sense. I guess I also think that buying a coat in London will cost as much or more than having it made here in Miami. And the RTW coat will certainly not fit as well. But I have no choice, I guess. And I am sure that the coat will look great to everyone except my tailor, lol.

Burberry and Aquascutum both still make some traditional raincoats, their shops are at the Picadilly end of Regent Street.
Another one in Picadilly for raincoats is Cordings. Not really to my tastes but quite traditionally English, too.
As an American you should be able to get the Value Added Tax rebated on the purchase which would reduce the advertised price by 16.6%, though I don’t know how much hassle this is to do in practice.
At Aquascutum, maybe the "Slim Broadgate Raincoat" is an option. It is not going to look amazing because it is a rain coat, but it will get the job done.

(I don't know how to imbed url links)
Acquascutum has a cashmere topcoat, but it is probably heavy like the topcoat that I already have. (That coat is designed for temperatures below, say, 30 degrees.) Plus, the coat is only about $2,000. To have a great cashmere topcoat made costs, as you all know, multiples of that price. So, even if it is lightweight enough, I am not sure how good that coat would look.

I appreciate all the advice. I guess I will just wait until I arrive in London and then, as quickly as I can, go buy a coat.

It's October and today it was 78F here, not typical I'll grant you. Something to keep the rain off will do fine.
Thanks JohnL. Hopefully, it will stay warm. If it gets cold, I will just have to buy a coat(s)
btw, when I am in London, I have to go to a black tie event. However, I would like to leave that event early and go to dinner. In London, is it common for men to be seen in very good restaurants in a tuxedo? In Paris, it is definitely all right, but I am not very familiar with London. Your thoughts (and those of others) would be much appreciated.
ajs,
khaki will not look great over a black pinstripe suit. However, I understand what you are saying about khaki raincoats. I know that raincoats are traditionally khaki. Looking at the Burberry site, some of the coats (raincoats and others) are very nice.

If it gets colder, I will definitely need a lightweight black cashmere coat because I need to wear cashmere with my tuxedo so perhaps I would have to buy a raincoat and a cashmere top coat.

What a good thread this is - Thank you Rob.
Just to extend our discussions of what to wear in London in late October / early November, how many pairs of shoes will you be packing? Obviously there will be your business and black tie shoes, but what of your 'down time' when you can just relax and explore the city? Will you also be bringing a more casual wardrobe with you for those moments?
Thanks -
James
Try a covert coat from Cording's.
Hopefully, it will not be too cold here in October. My first suggestion would be a genuine Mackintosh. The firm has a new store in Mount Street. Alternatively, Ede & Ravenscroft usually has a selection of Macs. If it is colder (in the 40s), I would go with NJS's suggestion of a covert coat from Cordings or E&R (same cloth and quality). Both firms have tan, charcoal and navy in stock.
Yeah Debenhams and Marks n Sparks are where the all the cool cats shop when they get to London town.
If your in that end of town I always think Liberties is worth a look round for clothes.
