Navy seems to be a whole rainbow unto itself - So many shades.
'True Navy' was a thing you used to see advertised in various American catalogues, usually rather dark. I liked it.
I was down in Bath at the weekend keping my eyes open for Italian & Japanese tourists, as usual, in much the same way that I used to stalk Americans in Fortnum & Masons before Americans gave up on wearing Ivy League around town, and I certainly saw a lot of Navy & Khaki combos. Jolly good I thought.
Navy on Navy can be a nice look - As long as the Navys are different & you get that lovely 'tone on tone' thing going on. The inky Navy of a cotton Keydge jacket over the gym knicker Navy of a cotton knit crewneck is especially pleasing.
Navy also ages & fades very well, especially on cotton items where the seams can go pleasingly paler with washing & wearing. A very nice look. Patina and all that.
You can't go wrong can you?
A navy blue blazer with dark (british) khaki trousers - nice.
It is my dark shade of choice, I never wear black unless it is in my accessories, same with white. Navy is king, what I like with the blues is sometimes you get a reddy indigo navy, which can take you down the red and purple road, or a more yellowy blue, which kicks you off into yellows and greens and turquoises. Lots of choice just from that humble blue.
Is there a degree of financial remuneration for every mention of K*ydge on these pages?
To me these jackets are the sartorial equivalent of 'coffee' made from scorched peas or corn.
I think he's just saying Keydge is being peddled hard and is a bit ersatz, isn't he? I do like a contrarian point of view, and NSB has long been one of my favourite posters - along with your good self, John.
I should have thought a navy cotton version might look a bit like a school caretaker's coat. Team it up with 'postman's shoes' (Hawkins' Astronauts) and get busy with your bucket of sand.
Blazers are seen as a virtually indispensible Ivy staple, but I'm completely indifferent to them. Navy in particular.
My old school uniform was a blue blazer and a repp stripe tie with little school crests on. Neither item really works for me because I know I'd feel like I'm back at school if I wore them.
This subject cropped up again, in a slightly different form, very recently.
I saw a Daks navy blazer with metal buttons on Saturday afternoon. A mere £8 but not for me. Certainly not 'Ivy League', more Panama hat/UKIP.
But, some years ago, I more or less lived in navy Brooks Brothers and Alan Paine cashmere sweaters. I'm now looking for a navy cashmere crew-neck.
Does anyone do 'double navy', as once mentioned on here (quite likely by TRS in one of his former guises): navy polo beneath navy knitwear. Very classy.
The only person I recall here talking about 'Doing Double Navy' was Jo-Bo, and he wasn't talking knitwear.
Just reading this through again. Frosty was good wasn't he? Such a great feel for clothes and image, and 'gym knicker navy' - well that is just sublime. The boy was some kind of tortured genius.
I hope Jeff G didn't miss out on that one. There was always something about Frosty that reminded me of feasting on sardines and cocoa in the dorm at midnight before soundly spanking the games mistress. Or vice versa.
