I suppose there's a nother category, make sure you are so well dressed that no one could mistake you for working in retail. I say this not to pan the brave men and women of retail but rather to suggest that if your focus is not clothes and the showcasing of potential and/or exciting sartorial combinations, then you might want to avoid some of the "showier" items like medium to light brown shoes with dark suits, perhaps stylish in a carefree sort of way but not the sort of thing that a heavy hitter would choose.
Remember that, like with many commercial items, flashier things than are fit for the field are worn by retail salesmen to attract a customer's attention. I doubt you want to always attract a coworker's attention in the same way. Perhaps at play, you can "go to town".
