I have a blue one very similar to that '66, lovely and warm.
That bottom herringbone you posted today OO Bop is fantastic.
That arran hat is also really nice. I have a similar hat but without the heathering. Very warm and ideal with an oatmeal Shetland and plaid flannel shirt.
Donegal grows on me these days. It's the less rugged cousin to Harris. I'd love a pair of high waisted Donegal strides in this weather.
That is a Magee cloth fxh! As for what to wear with it, black or dark navy troose and very pale ecru shirt.? Bottle green knit?
Donegal in a jacket can look a touch 'rockabilly' if you're not careful. You also don't want to look like one of those tweedy sofa-beds people used to have in the 60s. Magee, though, are usually very pleasant. It's perhaps an even nicer look for knitwear - I wouldn't mind a navy flecked shawl cardigan, for example - and it definitely enhances a Shetland (saddle shoulders or not). What's the weave they call 'thorn proof'?
Pretty sure it is a barleycorn. Although I'm not 100%

I have ties a cap and a jacket bought when I was in Donegal. Not Ivy but I do like the cloth. I do not think of knitwear as Donegal.
I also have a lovely Dunn&Co overcoat in Donegal with football buttons stuck in the back of the wardrobe. Good condition but too small for me.
I also like the 1960s West of Ireland farmer look - dark suit with jumper underneath worn with cap - Sunday Best demoted to work wear. Sadly now mostly replaced by baseball cap and jeans.
A poor ould fella is something to be. A pint and a smoke, some horse racing, Johnny McEvoy singing 'the Boston Burglar'. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Book-Poor-Ould-Fellas/dp/0340979186
''The Poor Ould Fella is perhaps the most loved and definitely the most endangered species in Ireland. The Celtic Tiger has, alas, passed him by. As modern life continues to intrude on his traditional ways, he has little choice but to retreat to the safety of the pub or the comfort of his own fireside. Yet even in these familiar places of consolation, the 21st century threatens his peace of mind. How the Poor Ould Fella despises such modern concoctions as alcohol-free Guinness, the smoking ban and reality television.
In The Book of Poor Ould Fellas, for the first time, this dying way of life is dissected by the witty pen of one of Ireland’s favourite writers, Declan Lynch, accompanied by the darkly humorous illustrations of Father Ted and I Keano creator Arthur Mathews. Many topics of significance to the POF come under inspection, such as The Internet, The Carvery Lunch, Telly Bingo, The Dog Called Mick, the New Mass, Mobile Phones and Hovels that are now Worth a Million. Here we discover the Ladies they Like (Sophia Loren, Grace Kelly and Maureen O’Hara), Ladies They Don’t Like (Sinead O’Connor); Their ideal TV Schedule (Johnny McEvoy In Concert, Colombo, Lots of Horse Racing) and Their Nightmare TV schedule (Anna Nolan, Celebrity Chefs, Trinny and Susannah)''
Just bought a Donegal tweed jacket for £30 on the Bay, which I hope will be a decent fit. Quite a low price for Irish tweed, isn't it? I'll probably dress it down somewhat with Levis and loafers; possibly even Jack Purcell.
Sounds a good price
Unlike tweed, a good Donegal can have so many colours in it, that it goes with almost anything.
My most worn item, bar none, is a brown/green/yellow/blue/red donegal Failsworth baker/news boy. Love it
Rather a nice coat for sale on Ebay at £25. The seller insists on collection in person - which probably means using a courier. Drives the price up somewhat.
I really like Donegal flecks and I think it is completely different from the 1950s Shantung Silk jackets which I don’t mind on some guys. It’s just a very period look but Donegal looks pretty classic. “Timeless?? as they say.
A classic post by Kingstonian there in 2011.
@AFS Indeed. You'd think living on the Emerald Isle, it'd be easy enough to find. Not so, other than the ubiquitous Magee jackets, which frankly are a bit shit. Trousers in particular seem to be bordering on impossible to come by - even the couple (and they're getting increasingly scarce) of old-fashioned Gentlemen's outfitters we have within driving distance have failed me.
