No bullshit - my brother in law - was at school with one of Mobutus sons - and he says he was a right hoho -I will ask him if Mobutu took part in the dads egg and spoon race at sports day- and report back
There's something not quite right with the West's seeming fascination with this Sapeur business. It's in too many videos and too many books on style. I am not quite sure what everyone thinks this proves but it appears the fact that the Congo has a handful of well dressed men is cause for concern. Perhaps theyve given up looking for that same handful in NYC or London or on AAAC and Styleforum?
It's an interesting sub-culture from an anthropological perspective and as it's colourfully flamboyant and stylised in its rituals it has excellent potential as a documentary subject, sell Guinness and to have in R&B videos to compliment the big booty girls. The fact that they all end-up impoverished or selling themselves to Parisiens all adds to the poetry and mystique of it all. They may be the modern equivalent of romantic poets.
