Mecca for the white shirt can be found on the third floor at 28 Place Vendôme in Paris. Hundreds of different white shirting, on the bolt. It's such a pleasure to consider a particular cloth by unfurling a mètre, as opposed to fingering a swatch.

The real beauty of a white shirt for me is that I can wear any tie with one, and many of my ties are nearly impossible to pair with any sort of colored or patterned shirt.

You need to have a few white shirts. Although, I mostly wear them when I know I am going to meet with the sort of person who believes that a blue bengal striped shirt is mindless frippery.

I don't know that it should be an essential but it is one, especially in the USA. Unfortunately, sometimes it's more a matter of conformity than a genteel designation. Men wear the cheapest, ugliest, dirtiest, dingiest, lousiest white shirts and if that's going to be the continued state of the white shirt, it really would be better if they wore colors and patterns.

Plain white shirts appear to be the default option for accountants who seem to have a culture of plain dressing. Personally, I prefer to wear white shirts with blazers.
