The hardest part about wearing clothes...

Is figuring out why you want to wear them and for what purpose. It's admitting and seeing clearly the reasons you are interested in clothes. The more honest you can be with yourself, the better results you will enjoy.

When wearing clothes, is it possible to ape a certain "look" without admitting your motives or analyzing the reasons or choices made to arrive at the outfit one feels emulates this..."look"?

I'm reading a lot of posts and seeing a lot of posted outfits by people on those other forums who just whip things together according to some imagined recipe that only seems to make sense online. Further, there seems to be vast amounts of denial about wearing clothes for a particular result or effect. Perhaps this is considered too embarrassingly private or punctures the fantasy that these people really already are the person they're now trying to dress as?

It's like attending a porn convention and pretending you're not interested in the Stars but rather the scripts.

Does "Style" exist in a vacuum or does it only serve as a well done "accent" for anything one does? In other words, can you only dress in one manner or is style how well you wear something no matter what the genre?

Instead of thinking about the next purchase, think about who you'd like people to perceive you as and whether your choices actually produce this effect.

A holiday message from FNB...

But if anyone has any constructive thoughts about what they think someone should get out of clothing and how they should go about it, feel free to add your mark to this wall.

Re: The hardest part about wearing clothes...

I think it's only worth wondering how you want people to perceive you and dressing accordingly at work. Your performance and economic well-being is likely to be linked to the answer, so it is a worthwhile question. Even then you have to be realistic about it and do the boring bits first. The first question is, 'does it fit' and not 'how cool is this'.

When not at work it has always seemed to me that dressing to make an impression is the mark of the insecure. I wear what I like and what I demand from it changes almost daily. Comfortable quite often. 'Old fashioned' and therefore gently elegant quite often. Young and trendy much less often (although I own to starting from an almost insuperable disadvantage). For warmth on a walk with the dog quite often - and then in fabrics I would not necessarily aspire to any other time. To please Mrs GS quite often, although more in the colours and aftershave department than the actual garments. Fuck off I'll wear what I like quite often (although when worn to places like galleries and restaurants which are often a little too far up their own behinds I think I probably am trying to make an impression). And quite often it's a question of 'this sort of goes ok and I really don't have the time'.

Remember the old saying: "on him, it looks good". Style resides within.

Re: The hardest part about wearing clothes...

before I saw this thread, a question came into my head as I was driving home earlier this evening:

which is more important?
1. wearing what you think looks good
2. wearing what looks good on you

"What sort of post-apocalyptic deathscape is this?"
"I don't want to look like a cock hungry sailor after all !!!"
"When it comes to infidelity, broken families, and reckless fatherhood, the underclass are amateurs."

Re: The hardest part about wearing clothes...

Clothes, and the way they are worn, are incredibly semiotic. However, their ability to function as a sign or symbol relies in my opinion upon the environment they are worn in.

In the USA, where outward appearance and individual idiosyncrasies associated with whichever 'character' one is trying to express play an integral role in the success of that interpretation, I imagine dressing to a look could be successful. In Great Britain, where there are far more complex social issues at play, such as class snobbery and values, even if one was wearing exactly what it was imagined for a specific 'look', as soon as one opened their mouth or behaved in a certain way this character, or 'theme' as FNB puts it, outwardly exhibited by clothing could immediately fail.

Re: The hardest part about wearing clothes...

^ And that's another brand new level, isn't it?

The iGent comes into being & then straight away we get iGent wannabes - All eager for the approval of the MBs.

Not all the iGents we see elsewhere are even proper iGents...

The iGent is a fake, but isn't that better than being the fake of a fake which is the iGent wannabe?

In my iGent pyramid I'd throw some soft Pink marshmallow like Manton on the top of the heap. iRubbish, but so much better than the next level down who aspire to be like him. Manton is awful, but he's still better than that even more awful Mafooo...

No?
