Linen suits

This seems like the ultimate american in the deep south norm of dressing. Not so much worn up here in the north east, though the temperature can hit 90 and humid in the summer (not this year though). The New Orleans store Perlis seems to be the holy grail. Does anyone have experience with them? Does anyone out there lust after a linen suit? I bought one at a bargain from Belk. In NYC at Frank Stella the same suit seems to be going for twice the price. Haspel, an old New Orleans name now made in the Phillipines.
PS and just to match. The NYTimes offered up a style page today (last week they wrote an ode to white bucks) on the Panama Fedora. Apparently the fashion accessory for every gorgeous girl in her 20s in NYC and a few of us who still own one purchased in ther 1980s.

Re: Linen suits

In NYC the linen suit doesn't get worn much probably for protective reasons. Men just feel more secure in tropical weight wool. I actually think more men would rather wear seersucker which has become decidedly hip again.

Re: Linen suits

Well, I bought my panama hat twenty years ago. I feel gratified that young girls have acknowledged my fashion sense. For several years  in my office I was one lonely man, walking down these mean streets, wearing a seeksucker suit in summer, an object of general ridicule. 4 out of 5 colleagues now own a seeksucker. I'm breaking out the linen suit on the first New Orleans type day. twenty years from now it will be pictured in the Times.

Re: Linen suits

Ah, the linen suit thread! I wore it a few times this past summer. I predict a comeback in the northeast.

Re: Linen suits

You need a hat, a mint julep in a pewter cup and a thick thick accent.  And you need to be wiping your brow with your hanky every 30 seconds.

They're so stereotyped that they'll never be 'in' anywhere else.

Re: Linen suits

Love linen although have appreciated it only since a couple of years now. I now live in spain so weather is defenitly permitting this. I am getting 5 linen shirts  made as we speak (MTO) and have 3 more in the closet so will be covered intime for spring. Will get more made soon after and intend to only wear linen through out the summer. Pink, orange, sky, dark brown, burgundy, white, black ...

Have 3 linen suits and one seersucker and intend to add to those by spring. Can wear lighter worsted wool for the rest of the year round here.

So yes love the linen !

Re: Linen suits

A friend of mine has a black linen guayabara shirt that looks sharp.

Re: Linen suits

yep indeed it is.

I also have a black with chalk stripe linen suit with patch pockets. Wore them toghether with silk paisley pocket square, basket weave lace ups, no socks - for my wedding.

No tie. Admitingly it was a very low profile wedding at the local mayors office (not a church deal)
