One wonders what the abridgement will consist of. If what remains is just his usual sartorial counsel, I should think that was adequately handled in Dressing the Man. An updating of his shopping guide that comprised the bulk of Style and the Man might be interesting and valuable, but not if it has been pared down drastically.

Hmm...I see that it is going to list for $15 in hardcover, which is a pretty good giveaway that it's going to be on the skimpy side!

a number of the retailers listed in the original version have gone to the Great Haberdashers in the Sky.

The new edition has 128 pages; the old one had 399.

In '81 there was Making the Man. In '96 there was Style and the Man.  You can track inflation with these books (looking at the suit prices).  You can also see how globalization has kept some prices low (some ready made shirt prices; shoe prices).  I read about Hilditch and Key (Paris) in the '81 book.  I finally got there in '94 and got my favorite tie of all time.  These books are great travel guides, too.
