I was  a Coast Guard SP in Oakland 1976 on West MacArthur BLVD aka westmac.
Oakland was a curious town, with lovely nieghborhoods heatwelded against  bad ones. Sad really, there were a few incredible black jazz clubs still and a great barbershop owned by a WW2 navy vet. there were these awfull burger joints called Doggie Diners with a chef hatted dachhund roof that are still there 500 cockraoch generations later.
I started my first watch sitting in the corner booth and ordering lunch with my Alaska shipmate JoJo White from DEtroit Michigan. Owner told us not to sit there. I refused to move. A Lincoln pulls up tricked out like a pimp car- which it was.Two brothers walked in with full length coats, superfly hats, sunglasses and gold everywhere. They saw us and one whispered to the other who walked up, jerking his thumb to the door. I replied with my finger. He smiled and opened his coat to reveal a damned pearl handled colt diamondback. I smiled and pulled my service issue 1911. They retreated, owner walks up and explains the booth was the 'office' for watching his girls and he left to get a machinegun or shotguns. Jo jo and I ate fast and left out the back.
We're walking the BLVD at dusk and I see a black gal, at least 6'4" BAREFOOT in silver snakeskin 12" Elton John boots, hotpants and haltertop, thighs bigger than a trashcan and afro the size of a tree canopy. She is ROCKING a old MABell phone booth with this utterly terrified young navyman inside. She's screaming he promised her $20 to attend church with him. I gave her $10, got him out and the dummy was a mormon ex missionary. I made him pay me $20 and ordered him back to his ship.
Our next encounter were two Catholic brothers of a monastic order.They baked cookies for income and tried to help the girls get off the streets. I gave them the $20. West Mac was the redlight strip, but proving ecumenical.
Maybe an hour later we hear screaming and Mr Pimp from earlier is beating up a girl. I walk up, take my nightstick and take out a kidney and his kneecaps. Jo Jo  dumps him headfirst into a City of Oakland Trashcan. We took the girl to the brother's rented home.
We lasted a week until word got back from OPD we were causing mischief. I think there was a payoff or truce going on. I was 'reprimanded' by a new assignment in SF. I've been called a liar by others for  mixing up my streets. But anyway, I'm standing outside of Oil Can Harry's in full dress blues getting looks from the leatherboys and teddies. I went into the bar to introduce myself and ty to sort out the street scene and problems with military personel. This total flame bartender greets me smoking a coloured Sherman cigarette. He announced to the patrons who I was, that I was straight so no hitting on me and I was there to end the bashing. Sodom and Gommorah had nothing on SF 1976 with the Hooker's Ball.
They were a vibrant community then, now replaced by a vulgar vindictiveness and hostility last time I visited.  Oakland was scarier, with drug dealers murdering Black Panthers to make a street reputation and Jerry Brown running things.

NJS - got any good call girl stories? surely the legal profession is not above hiring subcontractors?
