Because he has been barefoot. In the park !
Nice stuff Stacey
Note again that despite it being a long tailed shirt it is not billowy (like Lemmon's shirt in The App't pics I posted) a close'ish fit but not baggie (esp at the back) like modern Brooks non-slim fit.
Also note the double vents on Redford's jkt....orthodoxie's...PAH!
Don't forget Charles Boyer and Mildred Natwick. This and The Seven Year Itch are tremendous comedies.
Thanks for the fine collection of images Staceyboy. 'Barefoot in the Park' was first a Broadway stage success (1963 - 1967) with Robert Redford and Elizabeth Ashley as the young couple, written by Neil Simon and directed by Mike Nichols , later to direct 'The Graduate' movie.
I like the screenshot of Jane Fonda wearing the duffle coat while fixing the heater , with Charles Boyer providing support. As an old French stager, Boyer would have appreciated the importance of sight-lines for the audience. I fantasize in the Broadway production the stage directions at this point might have read something like : "VELASCO turns stage right, gazing in to the wings." Let's not forget that Boyer appeared , along with Leslie Caron, in the 1961 film 'Fanny' so I guess he was on familiar territory.
A great anecdote told by Mike Nichols, how he demonstrated to his friend Redford that he wasn't suitable to play Benjamin Braddock when he auditioned for the role in 'The Graduate':
“I said, ‘You can’t play it. You can never play a loser.’ And Redford said, ‘What do you mean? Of course I can play a loser.’ And I said, ‘O.K., have you ever struck out with a girl?’ and he said, ‘What do you mean?’ And he wasn’t joking.”
Jane Fonda looked a lot better in a duffle coat there than I ever have.
I'm rewatching this now on Film 4, somehow Jane Fonda lacks sex appeal, in the way say Ann-Margret had around the same time.
A more innocent age, unless you were about to be drafted to Vietnam.
Jane Fonda is a dirty old cow.
She was also, of course, a sourpuss over Vietnam.
I'm not fonda Hanoi Jane.
"After China takes over the whole world, then the whole world will know why America's trying so hard in Vietnam."
10 nerd-points for those who know who said this.
Even the damn light-bulbs in my Giant vibrator are made in China.
We were watching 'Steptoe And Son' last night.
Harold to skank: "You said I looked like Robert Redford. I haven't forgot that".
It was Jimi Hendrix in an interview with Melody Maker, 28 Jan 1967...
"Better to eat French shit for five years than Chinese shit for eternity". Or something of that nature. Pub quiz time.
