I was walking down Savile Row yesterday afternoon to avoid the masses in Regent Street. I was going to Harvie & Hudson (for socks) and bumped into Michael Alden. After introductions, we popped into Huntsman and then enjoyed a some winter ale together in the Burlington Arms. Michael is delightful company and we got on very well.
Michael showed me two of his London Lounge Cloth Club projects made up as a jacket and odd trousers. They were better, admittedly to my uneducated eye, than those we looked at in Huntsman. The heavy shetland tweed was magnificent. We also discussed Savile Row tailors and it is clear that Michael, despite his personal preference for soft tailoring, has a high regard for houses that favour more structure.
Michael sees the LL and the cloth club as a labour of love. He also explained the recent, and apparently expensive, problems with the LL site. They were similar to those that I had experienced a couple of years ago. On the way to the Tube, Michael commented on my spat with Alex Kabbaz. I have not posted about it on LL so he must have seen it here! It seems that I am not the only LL member to have suffered from Kabbaz's "moderation".
Michael was in town to introduce Salvatore Ambrosi to Savile Row. The visit was very successful and Ambrosi will be making regular visits to London as an alternative to New York. The next visit will be in early January. The price that Michael quoted me represented fantastic value, especially considering how the pound's exchange rate against the Euro has slumped recently. I am certainly looking forward to January and another beer with Michael, a true gentleman in my experience.
Bishop, the 'dress with style' videos seem to be unavailable last time I looked. They were the best thing on the LL site. I never imagined that the cloth club would be anything other than a side interest for Alden. It is a small part of a small market.
I do not get on well with winter ales. To me they are a nightcap. White Horse in Parsons Green had an old ale festival and there was nothing on the many handpumps that would do as a session beer. They had Thomas Hardy Ale 11% alcohol and £9 a pint - but that is usually sold in very small bottles.
Moderation can still be bizarre on AAAC. They are just more circumspect.
What a small world!
The 1-milion pence question: What did he say about FNB.com and the Buff Bastards? Silence is assent?
Pity really, that site has gone to shite.
I cannot read or make out anything on that forum. Alden should have the genius who enhanced that website flogged.
He actually comes across well, and I still say it, Alden reminds me of my late grandfather who was a gentleman.
Indeed, yes. The problem with finding young people interested in becoming tailors in London, is the lack of affordable housing on a tailors wage. Quite simple, this is not yet the case in Italy.
He states the truth and banning the Bishop of Briggs beside, Alden is man with a thoroughly decent mission and recognises the problems and limitations that a young man faces when trying to obtain his ideal style through buying bespoke. I've not engaged in the London Lounge malarkey, so can't comment there. He's had some negative comments on his cloth club here, but his a passion shines through.
The flowery language as Formby points out, either comes from over-zealous enthusiasm, or being at the apex of a pyramid scam. Having not procured from the LL cloth club, my verdict (at this stage), sides with Alden as being one of the good guys.
I didn't even bother to read the article. I doubt I can learn much from a Duke of Windsor clone.
Well, you wouldn't necessarily learn anything new, but Alden comes across as a fairly decent chap. That's all, we already know everybody here thinks he is a hoho.
